i 4 Centime Clear-Cut Christiana Victor Whips Tribe and Platan at . Delaware and Gives Owner, W. G. Loew, Double in Race By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., May 30. William Goadby Loew won his second straight Christiana Stakes today when his Centime, a chestnut colt by Pavot scampered to a length and a half victory. Vera S; Braggs Tribe, who got away badly, closed with a rush on the inside to finish second, daylight before G. D. Wideners Platan. S. G. Stecklers Fort Salonga, the favorite, wound up seventh in the two-year-old stake and there was a dead-heat for fourth between Navy Page and Isasmoothie. A bumper crowd estimated at 22,000 that attended the holiday program on a cloudy and slightly chilly afternoon bet Fort Salonga and E. P. Taylors Navy Page to the exclusion of the others, with the result Centime returned a good 8.80 mutuel. His time for the five furlongs was :58. Besides being a consecutive double in the stake for Loew it also was one for trainer Dallet Byers. To add to the recurrence of doubles, Dave Gorman, who was on the winner, and Byers won their second stake in as many days, having combined their talents with Tea-Maker yesterday. Pavot, Centimes sire, won the same stake in 1944. His victory today was worth 1,075, almost double what Pavot won in his year. Purchased for 8,500 at Sales Centime was purchased at the Saratoga sales for 8,500 and Loew outbid Mrs. Allison H. Fleitas, owner of the Winlochan Stable for the colt. The Christiana victory today must have, brought somewhat sad. memories for Mrs. Fleitas, because she presented the trophy to Loew after the race. Thus far Centime has won three of his five starts and has been second on the other two occasions. His racing was confined to Jamaica and Belmont this spring, where he ran second to Brookhaveh first time out and then won two in a row before being beaten by Count Trim after a slow start. The Christiana moves Centime up into the stakes class and he has yet to be ridden by any other rider than Gorman. The favored Fort Salonga, winner of his last five races, including two stakes, had 125 pounds in the race, along with Game Gene, the only other stake winner, while the rest of the field had 119. The Steckler colt broke alertly enough, and was battling for the lead when he appeared to be crowded slightly, and dropped back steadily for the rest of the heat. Navy Page outran the favorite early in the race, while Centime was laying in close. Gorman moved, midway on the turn collared Navy Page and then put the Canadian-owned horse away. Navy Page dropped back after that, while Tribe came along on the rail with a late rush to be second. It was quite a distance back to Platan, who finished third without ever being a serious threat. WILLIAM GOADBY LOEW Centime carried his colors to victory in the Christiana Stakes at Delaware Park, which race was won last year by The Pimpernel also sporting his silks.
