Lincoln Crowd of 38,382 Sets Record at Hawthorne Dance Nsing Runs Second to Favored Wilson Colt While Happy Go Lucky Is Third By J. J. MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 36. Sam Wilson, Jr.s, Easy Mon three-year-old Gushing Oil, staging a splendid comeback after having finished unplaced in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, registered his fourth stakes victory of the year when he won the Peabody Memorial Handicap here this afternoon. The winner of the Louisiana and Arkansas derbys and Blue Grass Stakes was forced to a drive to defeat the Buddah Stables much improved Dance Nsing by one length, while a short distance removed and. finishing in that order were H. G. Bookmans Happy Go Lucky and the Red Top Stables Red Charger. The latter was many lengths in advance of the four remaining contestants. All attendance records for the Hawthorne course were shattered when a crowd of 38,382 thronged to the historic course on a beautiful, sunshiny day. The previous high attendance was 37,792, set in 1937. The infield was opened to the public for the first time since American Derby Day of 1916 when that classic race was won by Dodge. The racing strip was fast for the first time in over a week. Dance Nsings Gallant Effort Gushing Oil went postward as the favorite, but despite the fact thpt he saved ground most of the way he was all out to win. Dance Nsing, running back to his courageous race in the Peabody Prep, -battled it out right down to the wire and might have been successful had he been able to save some ground in the late stages. As it was he went rather wide on the stretch turn, while Gushing Oil cut to the inside and that saving of ground on the part of the winner might have meant the margin of victory. Gushing Oil paid .40 and ran the mile and eighth distance in 1:52 . He was ably ridden by jockey Steve Brooks. A field of eight participated in the twenty-fourth running of the Peabody, and with Gushing Oil the choice opinion was divided among the spectators as to the prowess of Happy Go Lucky and Sandtop. They were both reading 5 to 2 on the odds board as the field went to the post. The starter had them off in good order, with Gushing Oil showing slightly in front at the break. Rounding the first turn, however, it was Dance Nsing who was making the pace, with Red Charger and Dark Count close up, and Gushing Oil racing on the inside a couple of lengths removed. As the field straightened out for the run down the backstretch jockey Scurlock took Dance Nsing under light wraps and permitted Dark Count to move up to him, while Red Charger was racing easily in third position, and Gushing Oil seemingly in rather tight quarters on the rail. Happy Go Lucky was closer than usual and was under restraint. At the far turn it seemed as if Dark Count was about to "take the play away" from Dance Nsing, but Scurlock let out a notch in the reins and, rounding the far turn, the Buddah Stable racer had Continued on Page Three SAM E. Dark Count was dropping back slightly, but Red Charger, Gushing Oil and Happy Go Lucky were holding their own. It appeared as if any one of the four leaders could take the purse as they swung for home, v with Dance Nsing going a- trifle wide and the others going out with him. Jockey Brooks sent Gushing Oil through an opening on the inside and at the eighth pole in the stretch it was difficult to determine which of the three horses was in front. Gushing Oil, on the rail, got the call, with Red Charger, in the middle of the track, appearing to be slightly in advance of Dance Nsing. As they" came close to the finish line and with Gushing Oil showing the way, Dance Nsing put on another of his resolute bids. He passed Red Charger and set out after the Wilson colt and Brooks, apparently sensing the danger, went to the whip. They flashed under the wire with Gushing Oil doing his best, Dance Nsing following him determinedly. Happy Go Lucky was racing steadily and Red Charger holding on well. As previously stated, Gushing Oils margin was one length, Dance Nsing second by a half length, and Happy Go Lucky, third by a head. It was a thrilling and pleasing horse race. Best of the preliminary affairs was the Take Wing Purse; which held down fifth position and was at one and one-sixteenth miles. The winner was Strike Out, a four-year-old bearing the silks of the Emerald Hill Stable, while Lucky New was second,, and King Diver finished third. Strike Out and Lucky Ned staged a nip and tuck race through the last sixteenth with the former just getting up to take the decision. He was ridden by Angelo Vasil and paid 5.60.
