Twelve Youngsters Seek Bay State Kindergarten Most Support to Be Centered On Mr. Songbird and Eddie Sue SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 30. Twelve of the finest two-year-olds in the New England sector have been named overnight to contest tomorrows fifth running of the Bay State Kindergarten Stakes. The five-furlong dash is the first juvenile feature of the long. New England season and the youngsters listed to vie for the ,000 added prize shape up as the most interesting fields to be offered in the young stake. Of those who have been impressive here during the first five weeks of the season, only Miss Joanne, winner of three straight, is missing from the Bay State line-up. Her owner and trainer, J. M. Grieve, has decided to start L. A. R. Pieris Cheryl Ann, a -worthy stablemate of the unbeaten miss. Only one of the eligibles for tomorrows feature, Miss Ann TJhlars Anns Love, is a non-winner and she is coupled with J. L. Friedmans Old Reliable, both being conditioned by trainer Jim OBrey. The complete line-up for the Bay State and their weights are: W. L. Huntley, Jr.s, Mr. Songbird, Reynolds Brothers Texas Melody, the top weights at 117 pounds; grouped at 114 pounds are, Anthony Catal-dos Jimmys First, Old Reliable, F. W. Hoopers Eddie Sue, Jay-Bob Stables Im Marie, Cheryl Ann, C. and S. Tassistros Papa Charlie, Annaloro and Tereses Alot o Lake, H. H. Horns Nalaca, A. Seymours Anne Bonny and Anns Love are slated to carry 111 pounds. Most support is expected to be centered around Mr. Songbird, with Darrell Madden as the rider, and Eddie Sue, who will have the services of Harold "Red" Keene. Mr. Songbird raced four times in Florida this spring finishing second twice and a like number of thirds. In his two local outings he has left nothing in doubt while winning impressively. The record of Eddie Sue compares favorably with her rival, having started four times in Florida, winning once, second twice and third in the other start. Her New England bow was a second to Nalaca, followed by a fifth in a dash also won by the Horn miss. That was the only time the Hooper filly was out of the money. Since that time, however, she equaled the track record for four and a half furlongs which was held by Eternal Bull since 1941. Her. most recent outing was a romp over Cheryl Ann at tomorrows distance. v Cheryl Ann was a winner at New Orleans before shipping North and she won her first local start in grand fashion. The race she was beaten by Eddie Sue was not as bad as the record will show, having been bothered slightly in the early running, but recovering in time to finish second, six lengths off the Hooper miss. Nacala. first gained prominence by winning the Invitational Purse at Havanna between Cuban and Florida juveniles. She then started against the highly regarded Biddy Jane at Gulf stream Park and after displaying speed for a quarter mile, weakened. In two local starts, Nalaca has been successful and her trainer, Ray Metcalf, holds her in high esteem. Im Marie began her career here at Suffolk Downs and after a pair of mediocre 2fforts, came into her present form by springing an upset against a full complement of maidens. The daughter of Bal-ladier Beatit repeated her winning per- rmance last Wednesday with a handy triumph over Fighting Thru.
