Master Fiddle Out After Peter Pan Has Armageddon, Olympic to Conquer Sub Fleet Declines Issue in Stake, But Faces Five Fast Sprint Rivals in Commando BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 30. The 0,000 Peter Pan Handicap, mile and one furlong , forerunner to the 00,000 Belmont Stakes, heads tomorrows Belmont Park program, while several other candidates to next Saturdays Classic are to dispute the seven-furlong Commando Purse. The Peter Pan is headed by Myhelyn Stables stretch-running Master Fiddle, while Dixianas Sub Fleet is one of six in the Commando. These two events are named for the father and son who won the 1901 and 1907 editions of the Belmont. Master Fiddle surged to prominence last fall with a victory over Blue Man in the Ardsley Handicap. This year, he continued his rivalry with the current choice for the mile and one -half classic, finishing a close second to Blue Man in the Experimental No. 2 and was lapped on him in fourth place at the finish of the Kentucky Derby. Master Fiddles best race was his narrow victory over Tom Fool in the Wood Memorial. Since the Derby, lie was a fast-finishing fifth in a sprint here last week. Dave Gorman will ride the gray colt tomorrow. The son of First Fiddle is asked to concede from three to 19 pounds to nine rivals in the Peter Pan, obviously a difficult task. In order of the weights, Master Fiddles chief rivals appear to be Cain Hoy Stables Armageddon, 122; Apheim Stables Quiet Step and Fred W. Hoopers Olympic, 116 each. Armageddon will have a running mate in Top Bet, 114. Pintor Shoulders 123 Montpeliers Pintor is second highweight to Master Fiddle with 123 pounds, but has been idle since finishing second to Jampol in the Preakness Prep, stopped early in the Derby and was soundly beaten by Master Fiddle in the Wood. The son of Goya n. has the confidence of his connections and may be capable of sharp improvement. Eddie Arcaros presence in the saddle will assure some support. Armegeddon has a pronounced fondness for the Belmont Park racing strip, having won the Champagne and Withers Hiles here for the two best races of his career. The Alsab colt had unusual early speed in the Preakness last out, but tired badly at the end to finish unplaced. Ray York, who is showing fine from here, will ride. Quiet Step, who will be ridden by Bill Boland, scored easily over Cold Command, Old Ironsides and others in a mile event on a sloppy track here 10 days ago. That was his first success since he won a division of the seven-furlong Bahamas Handicap at Hialeah. Olympic is an English colt who ranked second among the colts in the English Free Handicap last year and has shown promise in his two starts in this country, both at this meeting. After being narrowly beaten by Jet Master in a sprint for his American debut, Olympic finished third to Grover B. and Old Ironsides at a mile and a sixteenth on May 15. That race was run in a sparkling. 1:43 and the English colt appeared hopelessly beaten at the end of six furlongs, after having had early speed, then came on again in the stretch and finished with long, smooth, ground-eating strides. Olympic, who will have 4he services of Ted Atkinson, may be the dark horse, both of the Peter Pan and the Belmont Stakes. Groyer B. May Be Choice The others in the Peter Pan are Belair Studs Golden Gloves and Charfran Stables Blenomar, 109 each; Hal Price Headleys Cajun, 113, and King Ranchs Armagh, 107. Golden Gloves romped before an ordinary field a. few days ago, while Blenomar was soundly beaten by Quiet Step last out. Though he finished second to Hill Gail ; in the Kentucky Derby, turned in a dis- appointing race in the Preakness, but has ; been training well in recent days here. Sub Fleet will probably not be the favorite in ! the Commando. This extended dash pre-1 cedes the Peter Pan as the fifth event on the eight-race program and the role of " favorite is likely to go by a narrow margin r to T. P. Morgans Grover B. This gelding ! has no stakes engagements to distract him from the business at hand, will be ridden ! by Eddie Arcaro and has shown blazing speed at this meeting, though beaten by Quiet Step, Cold Command and Old Iron-! sides in his last outing. 1 The others in the Commando are C. H. r Johannsen, Jr.s, Heap Big Chief, A. G. 1 Vanderbilts Whither, Vera S. Braggs Trick ; Pilot and Mrs. G. F. Spears Head for Home. Heap Big Chief, another without , stakes engagements, finished third behind Hitex and Primate and before Whither an Trick Pilot in a six-furlong dash on Monday.
