Ten Two-Year-OIds Vie in Mayflower As Meeting Concludes at Suffolk Downs Mr. Songbird and Im Marie To Vie for Favorites Role; Cheryl Ann Also Contender By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 27. Another successful season at Suffolk Downs comes to a close tomorrow and the eighteenth running of the Mayflower Stakes heads one of the most interesting programs offered during the past 60 days. Ten of the better juveniles on the grounds are slated to meet in the five and a half furlong feature for an added purse of ,000. A supporting feature named the Farewell Purse brings together a half dozen of the older thoroughbreds to vie at a mile and a sixteenth for a purse of ,000. Henry Forrests Tea Patch is the top weight of the Mayflower under 116 pounds, conceding from three to nine pounds to his nine rivals. Under the conditions of the Mayflower, Tea Patch picks up the top impost because of the two races he has won this year his owner netted ,100 once and therefore was entitled to only a six pound allowance from the top weight of 122 pounds. On the scale, H. H. Horns Nalaca, a homebred daughter of Dashing Ted Mar-glee, is equal weights with the Forrest gelding, getting a three-pound filly allowance, making her actual weight 113. Nalaca is the only member of tomorrows field which has accounted for a stakes, winning the invitational Florida-Havana Purse which netted her owner ,500. In two subse-r quent events, -the Florida-bred miss has picked up purses of ,800 twice and will have the largest earnings of the Mayflower field. Probable favoritism for the dash will be divided between W. L. Huntley, Jr.s Mr. Songbird and Jay-Bob Stables Im Marie. Each has won two races locally and in the recent Bay State Kindergarten Stakes run here, Im Marie was a neck before her arch rival while finishing second to Fred W. Hoopers Eddie Sue. Mr. Songbird carries 113 pounds in the Mayflower against 110 for Im Marie. There was also a three-pound spread in their last meeting. Reynolds Brothers Texas Melody and Haskell loom as a formidable pair for the Mayflower, the former has been training smartly during the current meeting, although she has failed to make an appearance under silks. In three starts at Oaklawn Park earlier in the spring she accounted for two of her three outings. In one of those races she decisively defeated Tea Patch. Haskell was second to Tea Patch in his debut at Oak- lawn and finished third in a later start. His lone outing here was a fair effort, finishing sixth in a race won by Donquil. Texas Melody carries 113, while her stable-mate gets in with 107 pounds. Another coupling which could prove very formidable is J. M. Grieves Miss Joanne and L. A. Pieris Cheryl Ann. Miss Joanne is undefeated in her only two starts, while Cheryl Ann has a record oL two victories in seven starts. Each are in the Mayflower Stakes with 107 pounds.
