Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 5. — The Westchester Racing Association opens the handsome wrought-iron gates of Belmont Park tomorrow, inaugurating its 37-day spring meeting with the 60th running of the Toboggan Handicap as the traditional feature. This 5,000 added test down six furlongs of the Widener straight course is the first of 15 stakes events on the flat, which are supplemented by another half dozen fixtures for the jumpers, whose admirers are successfully blocking the creation of a grass course at this spacious track. Gives Rivals Up to 25 Pounds A field of 13 has been named for the Toboggan, headed by Greentree Stables Tom Fool, who has a steadying 130 pounds and concedes from eight to 25 pounds to his rivals. Tom Fool, who, in the words of his jockey Ted Atkinson, has become "an adult horse," this year, made a brilliant return to the races at Jamaica last week, fighting his way out of a jam at the far turn in a five and a half furlongs dash and going on to score by daylight in a sparkling 1:04 Vs. The son of Menow had a marked dislike for wet tracks as a juvenile, though he won the East View Stakes over such footing, but handled an "off" track at Saratoga in winning the Wilson Mile last Continued on Page Forty -Seven Tom Fool Heads Thirteen in Toboggan I As Belmont Opens Meet of Champions i Greentree Ace Has 130 and Spots Tuscany, Dark Peter, Squared Away Eight Pounds Continued from Page One year and has trained cleverly in slop and mud in recent days. Tom Pools closest rivals in the estimation of racing secretary John B. Campbell are Harborvale Stables Dark Peter, Mrs. Samuel M. Pistorios Tuscany and Mrs. Jan Burkes Squared Away, who carry 122 pounds each. Dark Peter won last years Toboggan under 108 pounds, beating Crafty Admiral, and recently won an overnight event in 1:1125 at Bowie. The veteran Jimmy DeWitt will again ride the Piping Rock gelding. Tuscany, a remarkably consistent sprinter who was unplaced only once since his debut three years ago, was narrowly beaten by Sagittarius in the Jamaica Handicap, after winning the Rowe Memorial at Bowie for the second straight time. Since then, he finished fourth behind Indian Land, Hyphasis and Eaton town in the Camden Handicap at Garden State. Nick Shuk will ride. Squared Away scored an easy victory in the Paumonok at Jamaica, then stopped badly in the final yards of the Jamaica Handicap to finish fourth after leading to the eighth pole. He stopped back to eighth in the Camden last week. Jimmy Nichols will again ride Cary Winfreys charge. Sagittarius, who now races for the Winding Way Farm, gets in the Toboggan with 114 pounds and must be respected in his present fine condition. Eddie Arcaro will ride the Teddys Comet gelding, who will be coupled in the wagering with Edward Potter, Jr.s, Belfaster, a three-year-old who gets in with 105 pounds. Woolford Names Entry There is another entry in the Toboggan, Woolford Farm being represented by Delegate, 112, and Earmarked, 109. Delegate finished fourth in a sprint won by Indian Land last out, before that was third to Sagittarius and Tuscany and in front of Squared Away in the Jamaica Handicap. Earmarked was a soundly beaten third behind Tom Fool and Do Report in his last. The Woolford pair will be ridden by Pete Anderson on Delegate and Con McCreary on Earmarked. The Toboggan field is completed by F. Ambrose Clarks Tea-Maker, 118; Belair Studs Hyphasis, 116; King Ranchs High Scud, 110; W. Haggin Perrys Goodwillow, 105, and Jack Amiels Mr. Turf, 102. They could all be dangerous on their best races. Tea-Maker suffered an attack of shipping fever en route north from South Carolina, which delayed his seasonal debut and he showed nothing behind Tom Fool when he did start. Hyphasis stopped in two races at Jamaica, then finished a good second behind Indian Land at Garden State Park. Incidentally, Sagittarius was to have started in that race, rather than meet Tom Fool in the Toboggan, but was scratched. Eric Guerin will ride Hyphasis, while Hed-ley Woodhouse will guide Tea-Maker. Goodwillow finished well in the Paumonok, turned in a dull race in the Jamaica, then was narrowly beaten at odds-on by the amazing Stella Aurata in an overnight dash at Jamaica. Con Errico has the mount. Mr. Turf Lightweight of Field Mr. Turf, the lightweight of the field, could be the "dark horse" of the stake. Last Friday, the day the Toboggan weights were assigned, Mr. Turf led throughout a test at a mile and a sixteenth under 113 pounds on a sloppy track. His only other start this year was in the Jamaica Handicap, in which he quit after a half mile and finished last. High Scud, who is making his seasonal debut, had abundant speed last year when he won the Kent Stakes at Delaware Park and three overnight events. Bennie Green will ride Max Hirschs charge. Tom Fool showed a liking for the straight course by winning the Futurity here two years ago. Hyphasis won the Toboggan i from Tea-Maker in the same year, while Dark Peter, as mentioned before, won it last year. Delegate and Squared Away have also showed good form on the nearly invisible chute, while it will be a new experience for Tuscany. Campbell is offering the first of his optional claiming races tomorrow, a test at a mile and one-half and nine have responded, of whom four can be haltered for ,500. The others have raced for that price this year, but avoid the risk of being claimed by accepting a three-pound penalty. This event will be the eighth race. The first steeplechase of the season, the Annibal at "about" two miles, has drawn a field of five, while the only juvenile race on the program has lured a field of 34, including six also eligibles. Five more were excluded. The Toboggan will be followed on the stakes schedule by the fifty-fifth running of the 0,000 Fashion Stakes for juvenile fillies on Friday and the 0,000 Acorn Stakes for three-year-old fillies at one mile on Saturday.
