Good Brandy Drops Neck Decision in Chester Vase CHESTER. England. May 5 Reuters*.— I Robert Sterling Clarks Epsom Derby candidate. Good Brandy, who is by Rockefella out of Toujours, was beaten in a driving of the Chester Vase over 13 furlongs here today. Good Brandy, a 7 to 4 choice, was ridden by Doug Smith, and appeared the likely winner when he headed the pace-setting Eastern Venture a furlong and a half from home, but Manny Mercer on Lord Milfords ll-to-10 favorite. Empire Honey, produced a fine finishing burst to overcome Good Brandy by a neck. Eastern Venture finished third two lengths back with the only other runner being Canar-deau. The winner was received one pound from Clarks colt. This "Derby Trial was run at a very fast pace throughout, the winner being clocked in 2:51S on a circular track. Manny Mercer interviewed in the unsaddling enclosure after the race said, "It was a terrific gallop and I dont think he will go faster in the Derby. Good Brandy was catching my horse again at the finish and I think he might be slightly better Derby horse than Empire Honey." Empire Honey, by Honey way— Empress, was quoted as 100 to 8 fourth favorite for the Derby last night, one point shorter than Good Brandy.
