Roy Sang Scores Stunning Upset in Ascot Park Dash Defeats Betty Smart by Neck as Favorite, Bee Golly, Runs Third By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. May 5. — Mr. and Mrs. Vic Decavitchs Roy Sang scored a stunning upset in one of the better races here this afternoon. With Ronald Brigley in the irons, he scampered over the four and a haif furlongs in :56 on a muddy track and returned his scattered backers 4.20. Betty Smart was second, beaten a neck and was, in turn, a half length in front of Bee Golly, the favorite, at the finish. Roy Sang was well back in the early stages of the race, breaking in seventh position and remaining in that position after the first quarter of a mile had been run. Racing into the far turn, Brigley guided his mount to the outside and Roy Sang responded gamely to pressure at the head of the stretch he was two lengths in back of the pacesetter, Betty Smart. A few strides inside the furlong marker, Betty Smart started to tire and Roy Sang came along with his determined rush and drew to even terms. Those two battled it out that way for a few strides before the ultimate winner got to the front about 70 yards from the end. Roy Sang is a five-year-old gelding and was making his second start of the young season. He was seventh in another local appearance. Last season he won two races in 15 trips postward. His owners run the track kitchen at Thistle Down. Jean Bird, who wound up last here yesterday, beaten 22 lengths, came back today to score a convincing four-length victory in the third race. The daughter of Jean Val-jean was ridden by Eddie Plesa and paid 2.40. Her time in defeat yesterday on a fast track was :57%, while today on a muddy strip her time was :55%. Red April was second and Pharasan third.
