Payments Reduce Roster Of Queens Plate to 35 Canadianas Sensational Trials Reduce Prospective Field Greatly TORONTO, Ont., May 5.— The field for the ninety-fourth running of the Queens Plate was trimmed to 35 today after the penultimate payments of 00 had been checked at the Toronto offices of the Ontario Jockey Club. Owners who wish their horses to compete in North Americas oldest horse race will be forced to dig up another 50 when they enter their horses ; one day before the Plate — which is scheduled for Coronation Day, Tuesday, June 2. The number of those dropping out caused by the May 1 payment was not surprising in view of the manner in which Canadiana, , the even money favorite, has been training. Canadiana has been working very impressively. Canadianas western Canadian rival Virginia Fair, still is in the race. As a matter of fact, Virginia Fairs owner, James Charlesworth of Edmonton, made his 00 I payment a good month before the stipulated date of May 1. With one or two exceptions, all the leading two-year-olds of f 1952 accepted the issue. . There were 178 original nominations for the race on December 1, 1951. The field J j was cut to 72 last December. The present number of horses left in the race indicates 5 that the Plate Trial — which is scheduled 1 for Saturday, May 23 — will be run in at t least two, and probably three, divisions. Most notable absentee when the pay-, ments were checked today was Gala Easter, I owned by the Hon. Lucien Maynard, attorney-general ; of Alberta. Mr. Maynard had 1 been quite high on his colt during the win-, ter months.
