► ~ Again II. Garners Purse at Pimlico Kroeses Argentine-Bred Is Favored by Fast Early Pace To Upset Sonic, Gloriette By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent J PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 5.— Favored by a suicidal early pace, Jack S. Kroeses Argentine-bred Again II. rallied from last position to be an easy winner in this afternoons featured Pleasant Hills Purse. Second at the end of the mile and one-sixteenth was Jerry Lynchs Sonic, beaten a length and a half in 1:455. Mrs. E. Kendall Weils Gloriette was three and a half lengths farther back in third position, followed by Samuel A. Pecks Potpourri and Herb Boorses G. R. Petersen. Again II. was making but his fourth start in this country and was scoring his initial success. He was ignored by the crowd of 9,046 and returned 1.80 after being ridden to victory by Luis Torres. Earlier showers had merely served to make the track extremely fast, though damp in appearance and times throughout the program were good. The winner, now under the training of Belmont Evans, had impressed this winter in Florida as a willing worker in the morning but he failed to race to expectations in competition. His best effort in a three-race campaign saw him third behind Anchor Man and The Gink over a heavy track at Hialeah. He had again trained satisfactorily here and todays outing was his first in about two and one-half months. G. R. Petersen Stops Badly The task confronting Again II. was made comparatively easy when Sonic and G. R. Petersen participated in a duel which figured to deprive either of serious consideration in the late stages. Sonic, however, held on much better than his rival, for G. R. Petersen stopped to a walk through the stretch and was beaten more than a dozen lengths while trailing the field. After being last as the field entered the backstretch, Again II. showed a willingness to run and saved ground along the rail, as Torres cautiously allowed him to move to the pacemaking Sonic after the top pair had turned in a quarter in :23V5, a half mile in :46% and six furlongs in 1:11%. Thereafter, it was merely a "cakewalk" for the foreign-bred as he drew clear as Torres elected during the run for the wire. Norman S. Scavas Mr. Skip took the measure of a fair field of allowance three-year-olds in the mile and one-sixteenth sixth race to return 1.20 in his second successive victory. There was a disqualification in the race, Harry B. Cohens Buck n Gee having been deprived of second position after finishing less than a length behind Mr. Skip. Buck n Gee was placed fourth behind Miss Ann Uhlars Anns Love and J. Harry Miles White Cliff. Mr. Skip covered the distance in 1:47% under Mike Caffarella. Buck n Gee, ridden by Art Monteiro, was responsible for the pace in this event, holding a commanding advantage into the stretch. It was when straightened for the drive that he committed the foul, swerving to the inside and knocking Mr. Skip into White Cliff, who was attaining prominence along the inner rail. White Cliff was eliminated, but Mr. Skip had enough left to out-finish Buck n Gee in the final drive.
