Sun Shower Under Drive To Take Meadow Brook The Mast Falls at Last Fence to Leave Cardy Chaser in Command By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 3. After chasing the rejuvenated Extra Points all spring, Mrs. Vernon G. Cardys Sun Shower found a stake today in which that champion was not present and went on to score a popular triumph. The stake was the 39th edition of the 1,375 Meadow Brook Handicap at about two miles and a half. Sun Showers score was facilitated when Mrs. J. R. H. Thourons The Mast fell at the final fence while challenging. The Easton gelding went on to score by a length and a half over Manton B. Metcalf, Jr.s, Beaupre, who closed with a determined rush. James F. McHughs Sundowner was another four lengths in arrears and 25 lengths before Brookmeade Stables His Boots. Lowry Watkins Tourist List was the last to finish, another 20 lengths off the board, while Morris Dixons Palaja fell at the third Continued on Page Forty-Four Sun Shower Gains Meadow Brook Win Under Drive to Beat Beau pre After The Mast Falls at Last Fence in Belmont Park Event Continued from Page One fence in the backstretch the second time around. I Paddy Smithwick rode Sun Shower, who ! was a solid choice with the crowd of 17,740 and paid .90. His time of 4:39 was the fastest in many years and only missed the track record set by Sydney in 1931 by a fifth of a second. It was a record for the Meadow Brook and made possible by the hard, dry footing. Sun Shower added ,750 to the account of his Canadian owner as he scored his first victory of the year. He had finished second to Extra Points in his last two. Incidentally, Sun Showers, score gave Canada a sweep of the chase stakes at this meeting, Lafayette Henry j Nelles, owner of Extra Points also being-from north of the border. Palaja set the early pace in the Meadow Brook, which began on the clubhouse turn arid led by daylight before The Mast, Sundowner,, Sun Shower, Beaupre, His Boots and Tourist List. Palaja continued to lead j until he bobbled badly at the fence after the water jump, at which Sundowner also fenced poorly. The Mast quickly shot into command, while Sun Shower moved up in the run down the backstretch the second time, followed by Beaupre, while Sundowner appeared to be going easily right behind them when Palaja went down, sending Scotty Riles sailing through the air. The Mast continued to lead around the far turn, but Sun Shower took command coming to the 15th fence, closely followed by Beaupre with Sundowner still in contention. The others were far but of it. Though The Mast had been gaining ground at every fence, he apparently overjumped ! himself at the 16th and last, at which he I took off right behind the favorite, and the 1 big fellow went down. Left alone in command, Sun Shower was put to a hard drive to withstand the closing bid of Beaupre, who gained steadily through the stretch. Sundowner finished fairly well, though lacking any real stretch power. The Mast Continues in Front Two eligibles to next Wednesdays 5,-000 Top Flight Handicap fought it out to the final inch of the Water Blossom Handicap, best of the flat races, with Marian W. OConnors La Corredora reaching the wire a scant nose before Alfred G. Vanderbilts Home-Made, who finished on the inside rail. Harry La Montagries Valadium, another Top Flight eligible, finished four and a half lengths farther back after slipping into command along the inside rail near-ing the final bend. Stephen Messanas Hadassah was a weary fourth, followed by Winfield Stables Boots, who completed the small field. La Corredora and Home-Made were almost equal favorites, the winner paying ,70 after Ira Hanford hustled her home in 1:38 for the mile. Eric Guerin rode the runner-up and appeared to have saved the slight lead he took at the sixteenth pole until the picture was studied. La Corredora, who won stakes in each of her first three seasons at the races, was topweight with 122 pounds. Weights for the Top Flight are due tomorrow.
