Fisherman in Peter Pan Speed Prep Gets Five Furlongs ln:59f at Belmont Porterhouse, Likely Choice For Handicap, Works Same ! Route in Slow 1 :05 Time BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y June 3. C. V. Whitneys Fisherman, who is pointing for Saturdays Peter Pan Handicap at a mile and one furlong, turned in a highly promising speed sharpener on the main track here this morning. Without being fully extended, the little son of Phalanx skipped a handy five furlongs in :59 over the fast .but not especially speed-conducive track. Fisherman is asked to carry 121 pounds in the Peter Pan, five less than Llangollen Farms Porterhouse and Robert S. Lyties Correlation, and has not been seen in public since finishing behind the latter in the Kentucky Derby, when both were unplaced. In his two previous starts this year, Fisherman had won the Gotham Stakes and finished second to Correlation in the Wood Memorial. Correlation, who is on the grounds, has not breezed since his bad race in last Saturdays Jersey Stakes, and his Peter Pan and Belmont Stakes status is doubtful, though the services of Willie Shoemaker have been retained for the latter classic. Likely Choice Saturday Porterhouse, who is a definite Peter Pan and Belmont candidate, and will probably be the favorite for the week-end fixture, despite his top impost, stepped a slow five furlongs in 1:05. Work watchers were not impressed, but the son of Endeavour n. has never been a "dockers horse." Charley Whittinghams charge beat seasoned older sprinters with a brilliant stretch run in while he won the National Stallion, Anticipation Purse and Futurity Stakes here last year. King Ranchs High Gun, who finished second to War of Roses in the Jersey Stakes after being blocked by Correlation soon after the start, has a choice of weekend engagements, being in both the Peter Pan and in the Kent Stakes at Delaware Park. This morning herbreezed five furlongs in 1:02. Max Hirsch also sent King Ranchs clever juvenile, Free Stride, five furlongs in 1:00. Spring Hill Farms Jamie K., who is in the process of being converted into a sprinter because of a throat condition that precludes his going extended distances, stepped a brisk half in :46 this morning, but John Partridges charge was aided somewhat by a tailwind. Arnold Hangers Iceberg II., who may be seen in the 5,000 Frere Jacques Handicap on the grass course June. 12, stepped six panels hi 1:13 this morning. The big South American was under a hustling hand ride toward the end of the prep.
