King Maple Is Expected To Annex Queens Plate Came Out of Trial No, 2 in Good Shape as Did Also Queens Own By JACK AYERS Staff Correspondent WOODBINE PARK, Toronto, Ont., June 3- Johnny Hornsby and Gordon "Pete" McCann, respective trainers of the Mc-Macken Stables King Maple and E. P. Taylors Queens Own, report their charges came out of their successful conquests of Wednesdays Plate Trial No. 2 in excellent shape. After a couple of days rest, both colts will probably be asked for a slow mile early next week and receive their final blow-outs for the 95th running of the Queens Plate next Friday morning. This morning this writer interviewed a number of observant horsemen anent yesterdays plate trials and it appears to be the gerieral opinion along shedrow that King Maple, Canadas 1953 Horse of the Year, will register his eighth straight victory come Saturday, June 12. According to jockey Herb Lindberg, who rode King Maple in Wednesdays mile and 70 yards affair, he has yet to turn the robust son of Fairaris and Noon Maid loose. The McMacken colt went to the front leaving the back lane when Lindberg only showed him the whip and from ihat point to the final marker Lindy had quite an armful of horse. Queens Own, an unknown quantity as a stayer until Plate Trial No. 2, answered that question promptly when he moved away from the Bur-Fit Stables Collisteo in his division of the Trial. Considered the speed horse in the event, Collisteo was joined by Queens Own nearing the three- furlong pole and the pair raced lapped on each other until midway of the homestretch run. After being struck a few times by jockey Bert Albert, Queens Own and Collisteo parted company, with the Taylor colt drawing away with authority in the final yards. According to jockey Albert, Queens Own could have taken the lead away from Collisteo a lot sooner than he did.. However, the lad learned in the six furlongs of Plate Trial No. 1 that the Taylor colt wanted to loaf after gaining command. This was the reason for Albert not calling on Queens Own in Wednesdays event until the final furlong marker. The Bur-Fit Stables Pancho, who finished in the runner-up position to King Maple and the same establishments Collisteo who finished in the second compartment to Queens Own, both came out of the event in good shape according to trainer Dick Townrow and are considered certain starters in the Queens Plate. After Wednesdays test, it would appear that no more than nine Canadian foaled three-year-olds would compete in the nine furlongs of the Guineas. They are McMacken Stables King Maple, E. P. Taylors Queens Own and Staff Reporter, Dr. L. H. Applebys Hi Laude, Bur-Fit Stables Collisteo and Pancho, J. E. F. Seagrams Three Striper and Armstrong brothers Trochanter and Heptad.
