Mels Best, Duke Aumar To Clash at ThistleDown Meet in Six-Furlong Allowance Test; Legate Also in Line-Up THISTLEDOWN, WARRENSVILLE. Ohio, June 3. The sixth race, a claiming event at six furlongs, and the seventh race, also at six furlongs, but written under allowance conditions will headline the Friday card at ThistleDown. Both races have been endowed with a ,200 purse. The seventh race has attracted a limit field of 12 with four horses on the "also eligible" list. The field will line up in the following order: Hot Cakes, Stuyvesant, Mrs. Calabash, Brookhaven, Make Haste. No Return, Duke Aumor, Mels Best, Lee Mor, Amulika, Efcee, Harlem Square, Legate, Clendine, Hold DOr, and Blenmint. Mels Best, a winner this season while at Oaklawn Park, has a particular liking for the ThistleDown track and last fall ran several excellent races here. Jockey Paul A. Ward has been engaged to ride the Bischoff colorbearer as he did in his winning race at the Spa. In that event, Mels Best defeated Curtain Raiser by a length and one-half at six furlongs in an optional race. Mels Best did not carry a "tag" that afternoon. His time was creditable 1:12 over the fast track and after breaking fourth, wrested command in midstretch and then drew clear under brisk handling. Duke Aumar is one of the fastest horses on the grounds and is a recent arrival from Maryland. He won his last out at Pimlico on May 24, scoring in front-running fashion. And in three engagements previous at Bowie he came through with a win, second and a third. He has tremendous early speed and will be hard to catch once he gets out in front. Legate, who is from the powerful stable of Edward A. Simpson, was. a winner this spring while in New England. In his winning race he was in for ,500 and jockey Bobby Ussery got the Some Chance gelding home by a neck over Cross Ring. No return won late, in the Gulfstream Park meeting much to the surprise of the assembled gathering. With Bobby Bauer in the saddle, the Preece colorbearer downed Reb-Misha, the heavily backed favorite, by two lengths and paid a thumping 10.60. In the sixth race John Foster and R. Chapmans Chappys Pass appears to have the edge over his seven rivals. Chappys Pass won at Hialeah last winter and was also a winner at Bowie. Others slated to start in here are All Set, Padukan, Tasty Dish, Demfleet, Eldon M., and Tiger Flame.
