; Lincoln Fields Notebook Delegate Only Horse to Twice Account For Fleming Memorial I . . By J. J. MURPHY I LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, 111., June 3. The Edward J. Fleming Memorial Handicap, to be run here Saturday, brings back memories of one of the most courageous campaigners to win the race. That is Delegate, only horse to take the event twice. Delegate was a fine sprinter in those years, 1948 and 1949. As a t matter oi iact, ne wasi a good horse until old age got him, and he just about gave up. His final appearance in competition was early in the Jamaica meeting of this- year when he went to the post as favorite in a six-furlong dash. He just seemed to be plain j rrT-iin mif V-ir- Jn.t Tin took a couple of steps with his field, and then pulled himself up. Then, as if to say to himself, "I am a thoroughbred, I will not quit," he took after his field. He then raced to a contending position. But he was right in the first place. He pulled up lame and they said he was to be retired to Wool-ford Farm, where he was bred. He cer-. tainly deserves retirement. He earned over 75,000 for owner Herbert Woolf. Of that sum about 6,000 was garnered through his successes in the Steger Handicap. Edward J. Fleming, president of Lincoln Fields, died that year 1949, and the ! following season the name of the Steger .was changed to the Fleming Memorial. In 1950 it was taken by Lextown, then came .the Hasty House runners. Wine List and Roman Bath, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Allie Reuben, owners of Hasty House, finished first and second respectively in 1951 and were "in the picture" the next two seasons, i their silks being carried to third place by Inseparable in 1952 and Pomace last sea-i son. Pomace, winner of two stakes at this meeting, looms as the favorite for Saturdays running. A rather interesting thoroughbred slated to start in the Fleming is Precious Stone, a four-year-old by the good producing stallion, Royal Gem-II. He has been training well and may be a factor. Precious Stone has the distinction of having earned over 0,000 last year. He won eight races, but no stakes, although most of his profits came from being in the money in added money affairs. He was third to Native Dancer and Landlocked in the American Derby of last season. G. Rollie White, who has a number of horses here in charge of trainer Roy Mc-Donnel, is also well known in other fields. The new physical education building at Texas A. and M. College, where he is chairman of the board, has been named for him. Mr. White has served on the board of the seat of learning since 1926. He owns a thoroughbred breeding farm of over 1,000 acres at Brady, Texas, where stands Challadroit, a full brother of the stakes winning Challedon and Loumoud, a son of Mahmoud . . Johnny Adams is due back at Lincoln Fields Friday to do some riding. It may be that squat Jawn will become a "permanent resident" beginning next week, as we understand the Hasty House Farms horses now in the east may be shipped in . . Jockey Ken Church, another traveling rider, will likely "stay put" this week end, as he has been named to ride Oh Leo in the Fleming Memorial Handicap Saturday . . Ed. P. Madison, mayor of Kankakee, HI., was an honored guest Wednesday. Fred Crafton is distributing the stakes blanks and condition books for the Arlington Park meeting. . Stakes blanks for ThistleDown and Randall Parks, in Ohio, Continued on Page Forty-Three Lincoln Fields Notebook By J. J. MURPHY Continued from Page Five are also being passed out.. .Joe Korjenek, the TRPB man who has been stationed in Detroit, was an arrival. . .Mrs. Evelyn Pol-lien, wife of the well known trainer, John Pollien, has been confined to a Hospital since early February. Most of her time is spent in an oxygen tent. . .Have been notified that stall application blanks for Uli-Inois newest race track, Cahokia Downs, will soon be available. . .Understand .that Lillal, winner of the Colonial Handicap at Garden State Park, will be on hand for racing at Arlington Park. Four horses by Whirlaway were in the money on a very muddy track here Wednesday. Riot and Whirl Awhile were winners, Razzoo was second, and Pielettaway third. Razzoo is out of Good Blood, first winner of the Artful Stakes at Arlington Park, and of the Princess Pat at Washington Park. . .Jockey Ronnie Baldwins four successes Wednesday made him 10 winners for the meeting. . .Robert Sanders was. in charge of Money Broker in the colts trip from Detroit. Trainer V. R. Wright will be here Saturday to saddle the Fleming Memorial nominee. . .Marion VanBerg has shipped Endon to Detroit to run in a handicap Saturday . . . Arab Actress was taken to Washington Park Thursday morning to breeze for the Fleming. Adding to the woes of the management was the fact that officials of the railroad serving Lincoln Fields saw fit to cancel the first train Wednesday without giving notice. Understand that hundreds of patrons were left "holding the bag" for at least a half hour before a train for the track did pull out. In our book this puts the party responsible in the same category as the fellow who in the past has been in charge of herding the patrons aboard the Arlington Park specials for the return trip. Seems they dont know what time it is, even with those railroad watches in their hand.
