I.. N. Y., June 10. Six prominent candidates for Saturdays classic 00,000 Belmont Stakes were given trials on the main track here this morning and all of the moves were good. Llangollen Farms Porterhouse indi-- cated that his sore back had much improved as he worked more kindly than at any time in. the past couple of weeks, while S. Ly ties Correlation displayed undant speed. Greentree Stables Palm ee turned in a very fast three-quarters, lile King "Ranchs filly, Riverina, was jst impressive of all as she worked the 11 Belmont distance of a mile and a Iobert If. John Barry Ryans Buttevant went easy three-quarters, while Mrs. J. R. H. nels. tourons War of Roses breezed three tie Colt Pulls Away From Mate Porterhouse, working in company with Open Country, stepped a handy six furlongs in 1:14, with fractions of :2415, :48 and 1:01. He pulled away from his stablemate with authority, the latter being clocked a second slower. Trainer Charley Whittingham appeared well pleased with the 1953 juvenile champions prep, as well as with the faster condition of the track. The Belmont strip was scraped a bit Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, with beneficial results, particularly on the inside. Bill Boland was on Porterhouse this morning. Correlation, who has had a series of X-ray treatments since his disappointing race in the Jersey Stakes, but has been galloping a couple of miles on the deep training track and breezed a slow half on that course on Sunday, came over to the main track this morning and1 skipped a Continued on Page Forty-Three iexfet of Belmont Hlopes Work Out Porterhouse, Correlation, Riverina, Palm Tree, War of Roses, Buttevant on Track Continued from Page One ast five furlongs. With the speedy filly, tappy Mood, as his workmate, the Free merica. colt got the five furlongs in 1:00, hen was eased up another furlong in His early fractions were :35 and i7. With Atkinson in the saddle, Palm Tree ipped off six furlongs in 1:12 without rging. The Shut Out colt, who disap-ointed in the Withers and Kent Stakes fter scoring brilliantly at a mile and a iirlong here, had all of his speed this lorning as he stepped the first quarter in 35, half in :47Vs and five furlongs in :00. Riverina, who will be coupled with King anchs Peter Pan winner, High Gun, may e considerably better than . "second ;ring," as she stepped the Belmont dis-mce a full two seconds faster this morn-lg than the colt did yesterday, being locked in 2:34. Her last two quarters ere each clocked in :27, while yesterday igh Gun got his fifth quarter in :27 and le final in :27. The filly stepped the rst half in A9YS, six furlongs in 1:14 nd the mile in 1:40. To continue the omparison, the Princequillo miss turned l a mile that was one and three-fifths jconds faster than High Gun, and still nished slightly faster than the colt. While there is no recent precedent for a lly victory in the Belmont Stakes, the ;at has been accomplished, notably by .uthless in the Inaugural at Jerome Park l 1867 and by Tanya in the first running ere at Belmont in 1905. Actually, Rive-na has been tested over a longer distance l public than any of her colt rivals, liav-lg finished a bang-up third in the Coach-lg Club American Oaks at a mile and iree furlongs. None of the colts have iced at more than a mile and a quarter nd none of those expected to appear in le Belmont has won at a distance beyond mile and a furlong. Three years ago erman. B. Delmans How was scheduled follow her victory in the Coaching Club merican Oaks with an appearance in the elmont, and would have had a large fol-wing, but went amiss the morning berbre le classic. How, by the way, is a full ister to Cherokee Rose, who defeated riverina in this years CCA Oaks, and all hree fillies are by the staying Prince-uillo. uttevant Breezes Slow Six Furlongs Buttevant, who has finished well in many f his races, but bears out badly, breezed slow six furlongs in 1 : 16 this morning, rainer "Maje" Odom says, however, that lie Grand Admiral colt is a definite andidate. War of Roses, who shipped up from elaware Park yesterday, merely got the ravel kinks out of his legs when breezing hree furlongs in :37 this morning. The Jnglish colt, who has been pointed for the Selmont since last winter, is reaching his lajor objective in peak form. After wining the Jersey Stakes from Red Hannigan nd High Gun, with Correlation up the rack, he failed to give vast chunks of eight to Foxcatcher Farms Chevation in he Kent Stakes at Delaware, and was also eaten by Wheatley Stables Full Flight, rtiile Buttevant was fourth. Full Flight is ligible to the Belmont, but is expected to un in the Leonard Richards at Delaware n Saturday. At this writing, the Belmont field appears to have crystallized at an even dozen robable starters. King Ranchs High Gun nd Riverina, Llangollen Farms Porter-louse, Robert S. Ly ties Correlation, C.
