The upward of 4,000 thoroughbred racing fans who turned out for todays program did so on one of the hottest days of the current racing season. The track, which was in a decidedly slow condition early in the day, rapidly turned fast during the afternoon as the hot sunlight beat down upon it in conjunction with the work, which the track crew continued constantly. Jockey W. D. Lucas shortened the margin in the jockeys race for honors and scored a double in the first four events this afternoon. Going into todays program, jockey Anthony Licata. was leading with seven winners to Lucas four. His double now has him but one behind Licata and the affable reinsman is on several other live mounts throughout the afternoon. Daily Double of 34.40 Lucas first winner was astride Mrs. Betty W. Yohos Sir Sag in the opener, the first half of the Daily Double. Coupled with C. Wisbeys Gold Denarius, which was ridden by Raul Alonso, the Daily Double was worth 34.40 as a seven-four sequence. The second winner of the day for Lucas was in the fourth race when he sent Creel Brown, Jr.s Delux John the mile and 70 yards in 1:44 to be one and three-quarters of a length the best of Mrs. E. Julians Fiddlin Mac, who had the saddle services of Licata. Delux John was claimed from the event for ,000 by H. Fields, who will also train the good-looking light bay gelding of Reply Paid and Norm.
