4 Clockers Railbirds Catch Lea Lane Clays Fleet Filly Breezes Half-Mile in :49 for Miss America Stakes on Saturday LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, HI., June 10. Lea Lane, prospective favorite for Saturdays 5,000 Miss America Stakes, again was the center of attention for clockers and railbirds at Lincoln Fields this morning, although this latest training move by Charlton Clays brilliant filly was only a half-mile breeze in :49. However, in the words of clocker Bill Cunningham, the homebred daughter of Nasrullah Lea Lark "went very easy," and the local track at present is not conducive to fast time. Meanwhile, with overnight entries only 24 hours away, interest naturally turned to speculation regarding the number of other two-year-old fillies whose connections will decide to try the fleet miss from Paris, Ky., on the week end. Latest indications pointed towards a rather larger field than might be expected, in view of the prestige which the Clay filly established so quickly in her trials and her first and only start, which she won by eight lengths here, May 27. List Probable Starters Two of Lea Lanes prospective rivals Saturday also engaged in training moves this-morning. Hill-N-Dale Farms Countess Anita breezed three-eighths in :36, while Howard A. Jones Chicago-owned Careful Devil breezed a half in :52. The following fillies were mentioned as probable starters for this seventh running of the Miss America, an off -shoot of the older Joliet Stakes, which is now a race for colts and geldings, exclusively: Emil Denemarks Future Romance, R. C. Austins Mauverneen, Mark Leachs Joan E. L., Nicholas De Las Casas Thy Delight, Clifford Mooers Serry, H. H. Mundys Bob-belle, Locust Lawn Farms Next Option and Milton Resseguets Sweet Josie or Winter Love. The latter won her only start, which was at Churchill Downs, May 4. Sweet Josie won at Keeneland and was also a winner here on May 29 Fred W. Hooper is expected to start one or perhaps two of his four MisssAmerica eligibles, with Olympia Lou and the Gulf-stream Juvenile Stakes winner, Fierce, as the most likely, although Hooper also has Miss Alabama and Miss Olympia from whom to draw. Jones has Lulu Lil and Natchene, in addition to Careful Devil. Also making a good training move today was last years Miss America winner, the Illinois-bred Jay Jay Gee, who stepped five-eighths well in hand in 1:01. James H. Dunns Oh Leo went three-quarters, handily, in 1:13.
