Cow Town Strives to Make Amends Faces Five Lincoln Foes in Oak Glen VanBerg Gelding Got Into Close Quarters Twice Last Out; Spring Khal Dangerous LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, 111., June 10. Marion H. VanBergs Nebraska-owned Cow Town, favorite and "a good thing beaten" on the occasion of his latest start at this track, will try for better racing luck when he comes, out again tomorrow for the Oak Glen Purse, feature attraction on the Friday card at Lincoln Fields. The rather unfashiohably-bred four-year-old gelding by Brown China Flying Jinny, by Flying Watch, got into close quarters twice during the early stage of the La Porte Purse here last Monday, but in spite of his troubles, managed to finish third to Bugle Corps and Gus Fan after obtaining a chance to run. In an earlier race, on May 21, at this meeting, Cow Town was fourth to Silver K., Spring Khal, and Mighty Moment. The VanBerg gelding with one win this year, which he won at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs. The Oak Glen is a six-furlong dash, same distance as the La Porte in which Cow Town encountered his bad luck Monday. Spring Khal Among Rivals Cow Towns opponents in the Oak Glen include his recent rival, Spring Khal, owned by John F. Beck; also Al Karas Vidi, J. E. Nolans Remodeled, W. H. Bishops Steak Bone, and H. G. Knotts, My Dividend. The latter N seven-year-old mare, only member of her sex in the Oak Glen, won three races last year arid was a useful performer in earlier seasons, but has been raced sparingly this year, earning fourth money in one of her first three starts of 1954. The California-bred Spring Khal. won his first 1954 start at the New Orleans Fair Grounds last January. He finished second in his first two starts since coming to Chicago. After finishing second to Silver K in the May 21 race referred to previously, he was fourth to Count Alex, Uncle Tom and Victoria Cross. The five-year-old stallion, a son of the Hyperion horse, Khaled, was acquired recently by his present owner. Steak Bone, winner of the Thanksgiving Handicap at New Orleans last fall and other good races in 1953 as well as in previous seasons, appears to be one of the formidable contenders in the Oak Glen. His lone victory this year was scored last January. Vidi and Remodeled each has started twice at the current meeting. Vidi was fourth to Fancy Gent on May 22, then hird to Panade on June 2. Remodeled was unplaced in both his races, which were won by Silver K and Count Alex.-respectively.
