r Connors Corner By "CHUCK" CONNORS Two Supreme Events on Week End Mrs. Jack Amiel Convalescing Hialeah Officials Hold Confab BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 10. Two supreme racing tests are on the agenda for the week end, the Belmont here and the Queens Plate at the Woodbine in Toronto, across the northern border. The offerings are steeped in tradition and date back over the years. The Canadian feature for three-year-olds was first run in 1860 and , has an unbroken con- tinuity, including the war years, the First World War. when rac ing was suspended in Canada, but the race, then the Kings Plate, was contested under a special grant from the Canadian parliament. The starters for the Queens Plate are Canadian-bred. The big Canadian race each year attracts a large delegation of Americans from the Buffalo area, and along that stretch of the border the race is looked upon, as an international event. The Belmont is somewhat younger,- first I run in 1867, when this nation was recover-I ing from the ravages of the Civil War, but does boast an unbroken skein. The Bel- mont, due to legislative enactments by the state solons, was not run in 1911-12. AAA Jack Dempsey, the old Manassa mauler, came out for a look-see at several of the afternoons races .- . Mrs. Jack Amiel is convalescing: at her New York home following: surgery performed in the Hahenmann Hospital, Philadelphia. She underwent heart surgery performed by Dr. Charles Bailey at that hospital and the operation, was con- sidered by medical men as something .rare in those lines . . . Howard A. Reine-, man, master of Crown. Crest Farm in Kentucky and his recently appointed business manager, Pat Kelly, were among the afternoons visitors ... At private terms J. B. Partridge acting for the Spring Hill Farm sold the two-year-old Gallant Finar to H. Kodana ... Jockey Jorge Contreras passed around the imported stogies when informed that an eight pound baby boy was born to Mrs. Contreras at the Doctors Hospital, Coral J Gables, Fla. The hew arrival has the build of a steeplechase jockey of the future. A A. . A Baron dOsten showed up from Kentucky to await the running of the Belmont . . . Trainer G. P.. "Maje" Odom reported that Butte vant, owned by John Barry Ryan, would fulfill his Belmont engagement over the week end .. . . Mrs. M. E. Person, who races under the nom de course of the , Llangollen Farm, was on hand this morn-Jirig to. witness her Porterhouse undergo a j training trial for the Belmont. The colt moved along easily and came out of the j ! six-furlong test in good condition . . . F. J. i Horan, who maintains Horse Haven Farm j in Cold Spring Harbor, L. I., was on hand yesterday and reported that he has some 20 liorses, the property of different owners, turned out for freshening up and deserved rests . . . John T. Ward, who was here for several days as a guest of his brother Sher-rill, ! returned to Lexington, Ky., to resume his activities, managing his farm . . . Arnold j Hanger came out for the afternoon to witness a couple of races and was congratulated j on his appointment as a trustee of . the Keeneland Association. AAA Mr. and Mrs. Allison Stern flew over from Red Bank, N. J., for the afternoon to witness their starter, Pink Sands, in the second race. The occasion was the first time that they were represented in flat racing, heretofore confining their efforts to steeplechase and hurdles ... Frank Rosen, the Philadelphian, who races under the nom de course of the j Palatine .Stable, was among the clubhouse visitors. He has a draft of horses here with John Bainton . . . Bowes Bond came up from Delaware Park for the sale of horses in training . . . John C. Clark, Sam H. McCormick and Everett Clay of Hialeah conferred between races relative to the plans for the winter meeting. AAA Edward P. Taylor, the Toronto, 6nt. patron, was on hand for the running of the Top Flight in which he was; represented by Canadiana and then left for his home to await the running of the Queens Plate in which he will be represented by Queens Own . . . Hal Price Headley of Beaumont Farm in Kentucky is a recent arrival and" will remain over for the Belmont. His colors were absent from the Top Flight for the first time in several years .. . Harry Heiman of Utica, N. Y., Who races under the nom de course of the Apheim Stable, showed up for a few days racing . . . Bill Trundle of the Monmouth Park forces was on hand yesterday for missionary work in connection with that meeting.
