HUESO Oceqnport possibility worked three-quarters in 1:13 yesterday. Modern Monmouth Park Set for Banner Meeting Despite Impending Obstacles . i i. Increase Tax on Mutuels, i Delay of Opening of New Parkway Noted by Haskell, By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 10. While modern Monmouth Park, improved and beautified, is all set for a banner season beginning Saturday, a dark cloud hangs in the offing. This thunder-head is the bane of the sport, namely increased taxes on mutuel pools. Presently in the legislature, and apparently certain to pass, is a bill raising the tax on betting from its current 12 per cent to 13. The tax on racing is included in a bill with a boost in gasoline and corporation levies as the states seeks additional revenue. If passed, it is expected to go into effect July 1. This impending tax was commented on by Amory L. Haskell, president of Monmouth, when asked for a forecast of the season. "I was confident of a banner season this year, perhaps our best, with the anticipation of the opening of the northern part of the Garden State Parkway, which I would bring motorists from New York and the northern part of the state right to our door. There has been a delay, however, and the latest date of opening is now July 15. But in addition it looks like the bill increasing taxes will pass. Naturally this will have an effect on the handle, how much, I do not know. But I am sure Monmouth will have a good season. We have done everything for the comfort of the fans. Dining and wagering facilities have been installed on every level of the grandstand and clubhouse. We have probably more odds boards installed at various places on the track than any other plant in the country. This will eliminate a lot of crowding and bottlenecks as the patrons will not be forced to concentrate on one or two odds boards. Our racing will be of the highest calibre and I see a successful season." The field for Saturdays Oceanport still appears on the small side. Slated to oppose William Wickhams White Skies, who will pack 136 pounds, are Alfred Roberts Eaton town, with 113 and Joe Culmone; Belair Studs Hyphasis, under 114 and Sidney Cole; Brookmeade Stables Safety, 107, Augustine Catalano; Marlboro Stud Farms Jet Master, Sam Boulmetis with 112, and Mrs. Robert Gerrys Master Ace under 106 pounds and Joe Renick in the irons. None of these entrants were worked today, but some again were galloped over the track with a pony. A couple of stakes stars were drilled, with J. C. Bradys Artis-mo and Landlocked going together. They went out seven furlongs with Landlocked caught in 1:25, with his younger stable-mate timed a fifth slower. Their fractions" were :23, :33, :48, 1:00 and 1:12. Both went steadily and without urging. Joe Gavegnanos Errard King, who is expected to return to action at the session, went five furlongs in 1:06, breezing. Robert Levys Hueso, who may pop up in the OceanpOrt entries, went six furlongs in a handy 1:13. William Helis, Jr.?s Woodlands spinned five panels in 1:01 3"
