Bassanio Speeds to Belmont Victory Confirms His Good Second in Suburban Phipps Homebred Driven Out To Beat Resilient in Clear; Mishaps in Hurdle Handicap BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 10. Ogden Phipps Bassanio confirmed his surprisingly good race in the Suburban Handicap by running the fastest mile and a sixteenth of the meeting today to win the featured Smithown Handicap. The bay son of Bimlech stepped the distance in 1:43 and Sidney Cole urged him to the finish a little more than a length before Killian Farms Resilient. John M. Saiz Impulsivo was another half length away and two lengths before William Nobles South Point. Mrs. Charles Silvers Ruthred, the outsider of the small field, brought up the rear, after setting the pace for six furlongs, which is as far as he has raced since March. Favored by the crowd of 18,103, Bassanio paid .80 and gave the veteran Jim Fitz-simmOns his seventeenth winner of the meeting. Mr. Fitz is leading the conditioners at this session. As expected, Ruthred went to the front at the start of the Smithtown and quickly opened a daylight lead over Resilient, who was followed Indian file by Impulsivo, Bassanio and South Point, who was a detached last. Rounding the far turn, Bassanio moved to Impulsivo, but the pair were still several lengths behind Ruthred and Resilient. The field bunched abruptly at the three-furlong pole as Ruthred shortened stride, and South Point moved, up fast along the rail. For a few strides Impulsivo dropped back to last place. Impulsivo Comes On Again Bassanio took command. on the outside in the upper stretch, while Impulsivo came on again between horses, followed by South Point. The South American tried to bear in, then swerved out when whipped on his left flank. In the final furlong, Bassanio gradually drew away in response to Coles, urging, while Resilient outfinished Impulsivo for second money, as South Point hung in the final drive. Ruthred was not abused once he was headed above the quarter pole. The Jolly Roger Hurdle Handicap hardly gained any hew converts to that specialty. Guilford Dudley, Jr.s The American jumped the tape at the start, spilling John Cotter heavily as he became entangled in the rubber strands. Blue Run Farms Sea Term brbke a leg landing after the 11th hedge, rolled over and then tried to gallop to the last hedge with his injured leg dangling loosely. Jockey Albert Foot and Sea Term were taken away in ambulances. Mrs. G. H. Bostwicks Hyvania won the race by a half length over Mrs. Ogden Phipps Neji, and the Bostwick-trained entry paid . Lawrence R. Troianos entry of Democles and Curly Joe finished third and fourth at. the end of the about two miles in 3:44.
