BETWEEN RAGES By Oscar. Otis HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif. June 10. This column seldom .comments 1 upon political developments, but certain aspects of last Tuesdays general primary election have a direct bearing upon thoroughbred racing which we feel are of general interest. Of most importance was the bold showing made by Governor Goodwin J. Knight, whose attitude toward racing has been one of keen interest and fair mindedness. plus a willingness to attend the races whenever his official duties will permit him the. time. Pat Brown, the states attorney general, was elected in the primary, winning both Republican and Democratic nominations, and Brown, as the chief legal officer of both the state and the racing board, is keenly aware of racings problems. We chatted with Brown the other day in the directors room, and heAremarked, "The attorney generals office is intensely interested in anything affecting racing because the state has a stake in racing." AAA Brown further commented, and we cant quite quote his exact words, but the gist of it was that in the states opinion, perhaps the racing board made a mistake a year ago in attempting to conciliate the HBPA and track managements when a difference of opinion arose if only for the reason that when it was all over, some people wound up with the notion that the state had taken the side of the race track operators. This was untrue, of course, but in many J cases, an arbiters lot is not a happy one and both sides are disgruntled at the umpire. But most important, we gathered from our talks with Brown that racing people are not second class citizens, and that the attorney general represents all the people rather than just a few, and with this attitude prevailing, Californians may rest assured that issues that affect racing will be decided on merit. AAA Ben Lindheimer leaves tomorrow for Arlington-Washington Parks after spending some time at his Beverly Hills home, and, on the eve of his departure, told us, "We are quite enthused over our prospects for our summer racing in Chicago, and our improvement program is one designed to Election Results Pleases Turf Lindheimer Leaving West Coast Stable Venture on Quinella Win balance our programs between top quality sport and comfort for the fan. In this modern day of. racing, it appears to me they both go together and complement one another, and in so doing, pave the way for even greater gains, by the sport. We could have had some of the escalators installed a year ago, but the plans werent quite right, so we decided to wait a year and work out the bugs before actual construction. Im glad now we did. As. you might know, our slogan for the fan this summer is once you get to Arlington or Washington, theres never an upward step." AAA Lindheimer hinted that on the technical racing side, the Arlington-Washington stake programs were deemed satisfactory and adequate, and that the next forward step would be the upgrading, purse-wise, of certain overnight features. He also indicated he believed that the test of time had more than proved the. worth of the Arlington-Washington stake splits, which see substantial rewards accruing to second, third, and fourth. Lindheimer, incidentally, looks the picture of health and plans to be as active as ever before in the personal direction of his two outstanding meetings. AAA One of the best turf stories of the year comes out of Denver, where Luke Wayland, a Tulsa Okla.N furniture dealer and his wife have a two-year-old- colt in training named Blue Pair Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Wayland have been Centennial race track visitors during the last four years of racing. Last summer, they bet on a quinella, Zemitis and Isa Prince, and collected a record pay-off of ,203.20. This was the season, Westerners will recall, when Centennial experimented briefly with the quinella, only to discard it. Anyway, the Waylands paid their income tax on the winnings, decided that this was a chance to enter racing on race track money on the sum left after paying the government tax. They used the winnings to purchase Blue Pair Jr. from Fred Koontz. A A The Waylands dug through Daily Racing Form files for stories on methods of successful trainers, decided they could condition their own horse. At any rate, they took him to Oaklawn last spring for preliminary graining, but he did not train along in time to get to the races there so they decided to wait for racing at Centennial, rationalizing that maybe Centennial was their lucky track. The Waylands left, their furniture business in charge ol their son, and are now. embarked upon a turf way of life. AAA Trainer Ray Bell has accepted the latest setback in the career of The Pie King rather philosophically, and instead of going along with a horse with sore shins has decided to end the trouble, once and for all, with a stiff blister. It means passing up any chance to race for big money here at Hollywood, so his. next sights have been set on the big three-year-old stake at Washington Park. "He had to be a pretty good horse to run as well as he did in the Debonair behind Determine on shins that were giving him trouble," remarks Bell, "and when he returns to the races, hell be able to deliver his best." While beaten in the Debonair, The Pie King impressed most everybody as being a really top horse: And while on the subject of three-year-olds, the impression is rampant here that the result of the Belmont on Saturday conceivably could leave Determine as the unquestioned top three-year-old of the year to date, especially as Determine could win the Calif ornian Saturday against older horsesTand a race in which he is the pre-post time favorite. He would be a large stride closer to being considered for three-year-old, and maybe even Horse of the Year honors. AAA It has been remarked before, but will bear repetition, that Determine is a some-! what rare type of" horse who absolutely 1 thrives on racing, and, as we have pointed out on more than one occasion, his efforts are used mostly In racing and not in workouts. Trainer Willie Molter tells us he sees no reason why Determine shouldnt stay sound and race, within reason, for the rest of the season, meaning perhaps through scale stakes in the fall in New York. His recuperation from the Kentucky Derby was regarded by observant horsemen as something quite unusual. He had a tough race in "the Trial on Tuesday, came back with a rugged effort in the Derby, itself, and, astonishing to those who didnt give way to excitement after the finish,. York actually rode the smallish iron gray for an extra, eighth of a mile. He was tired and just a bit droopy on Sunday, but on Monday morning, he was as fresh and vigorous as if he never raced at all. He is indeed a horse of iron, i
