The The Eagle Eagle Makes Makes Good Good as as Favorite; Favorite; Mr. Mr. Turf Turf Speeds Speeds to to Aqueduct Aqueduct Score Score Real Brother Next " To J.J.Amiel Horse Sun Again Offspring Surges Up With Authority at Top Of Home Lane in Gravesend By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 15 Jack Amiels Mr. Turf indicated that he is now a formidable factor in the sprinting division when he skipped to a comparatively facile victory in the featured Gravesend Handicap today. Allowed to drift out a bit through the stretch by Eric Guerin, the Sun Again five-year-old reached the end of the six furlongs three and a half lengths before John T. Bradys Real Brother, who led Wheatley Stables Hilarious another two lengths. Quick Lunch, a stablemate of Hilarious, finished a neck farther back after setting the early pace. Close to Track Record Mr. Turf, who had won his only other start this year at Belmont Park, beating Master Ace, the conqueror of White Skies, was favored by the crowd of 17,868 and paid .40. Guerin hustled him over the six furlongs in 1:10, just two-fifths off the trackrecord which is shared by Doublrab, Beaugay, Energetic and Squared Away. The latter turned in another disappointing race today, racing with the leaders for a half mile, then fading out of the picture to finish sixth. Jess Higley sent Quick Lunch into command at the start of the Gravesend, while Mr. Turf was allowed to drop back to fourth place after breaking alertly. Squared Away quickly moved up to challenge Quick Lunch, followed closely by Ruthred, while Guerin bided his time in fourth place on Mr. Turf. Real Brother dropped back along the rail until he was last at the far turn. I Mr. Turf surged up on the outside at the final turn and took command with great authority as he straightened away for the long run to the wire. Quick Lunch fought Continued on Page Forty-Eight Mr. Turf Speeds To Aqueduct Win Surges to Fore at Top of Home Lane in Gravesend to Easily Beat Real Brother Continued from Page One on gamely, but Squared Away faltered abruptly just inside the eighth pole, while Hilarious began to come into contention. As Mr. Turf drew clear, Hank Moreno steered Real Brother, who had moved up between horses, away from the rail and sent him in pursuit. Though quickly running down Quick Lunch, Real Brother never threatened the winner. Hilarious came on strongly to take third money from his stablemate in the final stride. Ruthred finished fifth, followed by Squared Away, Belluno and King Jolie. Belluno, who had won his last at Belmont in good time, had no trace of speed today, while King Jolie was eased at the end and never came into contention. Coveted Avenges Recent Defeats Lazy F. Ranchs Coveted, well ridden by Flint Schulhofer, avenged two recent defeats by L. R. Troianos Kinjj Commander by outfinishing that 2-to-5 favorite in the Aqueduct Spring Maiden Steeplechase by a head. King Commander was sloppily ridden by Pat Smithwick, and immediately after the finish Edward Deveau, who fin-, ished two lengths farther back on Morris Dixons Imburse, claimed foul. It appeared that King Commander crowded that horse at the final turn as he came up on the outside after easing back and went on to ride the winner very close coming to the final fence. After viewing the patrol films, the stewards decided that there was no evidence of a foul. Coveted paid .30 as second choice and netted Mrs. R. L. Farish, mistress of Lazy F, ,650 of the ,800 purse. The Discovery gelding is trained by Oleg Dubasoff. former Russian cavalry officer.
