Detroit Lions Lose Third Regular to Armed Forces DETROIT, Mich., June 15 UP. Coach Buddy Parker ofthe world champion Detroit Lions got more bad news today, when informed Oliver Spencer must report for duty next Monday at Harlingen, Texas, Air Force base. Spencer is the third regular from last years title team to be lost to the service. Offensive halfback Gene Gedman was inducted into the Army in February and defensive halfback Yale Lary was called to active duty last month. In addition, rookie quarterback Pence Dacus from Southwest Texas State has answered Uncle Sams call. Spencer was Detroits number six draft choice a year ago and became one of the Lions most capable linemen during his freshman season in the pro football ranks. He received an Air Force commission while an undergraduate at Kansas, where he twice won all-conference honors and received All-American recognition in 1952.
