Sun David Strives For Repeat Tally Seeks Gary Purse At Lincoln Fields Trimmed Smackover Last Out And Faces Same Rival Today; Tuonine May BeTroublesome LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, 111., June 15. J. S. Bradleys seven-year-old chestnut stallion, Sun David, winner of his latest start at this meeting, meets another band of good sprinters Wednesday in the seven-furlong Gary Purse, which features the mid-week program at Lincoln Fields. The son of Equifox Sun Jesting found a sloppy track strictly to his liking when he came out for the In Memoriam Purse on May 31 and beat Mrs. Herbert Herffs Smackover by seven lengths. That race immediately preceded the Peabody Memorial Stakes, the 1950 renewal of which had seen Sun David first at the winning post, only to be disqualified because of foul tactics employed by his rider. Sun David has beaten some top stakes horses in sprint races during his useful racing career, which is now in its sixth year. He has started only three times this season. Prior to his May 31 win, he had finished fifth in Pomaces division of the Crete Handicap here on opening day, May 20. He began his current season by placing second to Scrutinized, beaten only a half length, at Churchill Downs on May 7. Good Record Last Year Smackover, who was closest to the Bradley stallion at the finish of the In Memoriam and who was also second to Pomace in the Crete, is one of Sun "Davids, rivals for tomorrows Gary Purse. Smackover won five good races last year. He closed his 1953 campaign by winning three consecutive races, then finishing fourth to Second Avenue in the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs. In his four" starts so far this year, the son of Eight Thirty More Delight finished second in the two races previously mentioned, also got third and fourth money, respectively, in his other two starts. For the Wednesday feature Sun David will carry 117 pounds and will have the services of jockey Arnold Kirkland, regular rider of the horses trained by Howard Wells, owner, incidentally, of Sun Davids sire, Equifox, one of the best sons of the great Equipoise. Smackover gets in with 108 pounds, with Steve Brooks being trainer Jake Lowensteins choice as a rider. Completing the field for the Gary are Mrs. O. S. Demings Warless, 114; Jacnot Stables Amphiblen, 120; Virginia Schwabs five-year-old mare, Vixen Fixit, 103; West Wind Stables Breadwinner, 109; Carl Grahams Wabash Moon, 109; Clifford Lusskys Tuonine, 112. Of the three last-named four-year-old fillies, Tuonine was a recent winner at this meeting. After two unsuccessful races at Louisville the daughter of Reaping Reward Valdina Gleam finished second to the good filly, Good Call, here on May 28 and followed that effort with a victory over Koritza, Challcote, and othersj on June 3. There is a striking similarity in the recent records of Breadwinner and Wabash Moon, each of these fillies having won seven races at three last year, and both just beginning their 1954 campaigns. Vixen Fixit was third to Mimi Mine and Ruhe in her only start at the meeting, her second of the current year. She won three races, placed in five more at four last season. The four-year-old Heliopolis gelding, Warless, unplaced in the Crete Handicap on opening day, has not started since. Just prior to shipping to Chicago, Warless was a handy winner at Gulfstream Park. The six-year-old stallion, Amphiblen, top weight for the Gary, is pointing for next Saturdays 0,000 Lincoln Handicap. Winner of two races this year, the bay son of Amphitheatre Beauty Blen finished fifth to Arab Actress in his only start at this meeting.
