Flanders R.-Vt. said today .he has received unofficial encouragement from the Administration for his move to strip Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy of his Senate Committee chairmanships. Flanders also told a news conference that he has "received many expressions of support from Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle." Urges Enactment of Communist Control WASHINGTON, D. C, June 21.— Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr., urged Republican congressional leaders at a White House conference today to press for enactment of Communist control legislation now pending "before the judiciary committees of both Houses. Brownell joined the regular weekly legislative conference between President Eisenhower and, the Republican leaders of the House and Senate. Truman Progressing Satisfactorily KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 21.— Former President Harry S. Truman, progressing satisfactorily after an emergency operation for removal of his gall bladder and appendix, spent an "excellent night/ attendants at Research Hospital reported today. Brig. Gen. Wallace R. Graham, who-performed the surgery, was Mr. Trumans physician at the White House. He said it was "too early to tell when he will be able to take a few steps, but it wont be today." Predicts GOP Will Defeat Exemptions Boost WASHINGTON, D. C, June 21. -Senate Republican leader William F. Knowland predicted today the Republicans will beat down after "quite a hassle" a Democratic drive to boost personal income tax exemptions this year. Knowland and other GOP Senators believe they -have the votes to hold the tax- reform bill in line with Administration recommendations and without any amendments providing general income tax relief. Consumer Buying at Near-Record Levels WASHINGTON, D. C, June 21.— Demand for cars, stoves, television sets and other durables has fallen off noticeably, but over-all consumer buying is rolling along at near-record- levels. The Commerce Department said, today retail sales in April and May, after seasonal adjustments, were "slightly higher" than in the first quarter of the year and only 1 per cent below last year. FOREIGN: Search Seacoast for Terrill Party RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, June 21. — The American Air Force and the Brazilian Navy today searched the seacoast near, here for Robert P. Terrill, economic counsellor of the American Embassy, and three other-persons missing since Thursday in a 40 -foot cabin cruiser. The party had gone on a fishing trip in coastal waters near Hio de Janeiro arid failed to return. France Will Not Agree to Sell Out LONDON, England, June 21.— Prime Minister Winston Churchill was told today that France will not agree to any disastrous "sell-out" in Indo-China, authoritative sources said. They said that assurance from Frances new premier, Pierre Mendes-France, was given Churchill by Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden in his report to the prime minister on Geneva Conference developments. Believe 15 Detained Americans Dead GENEVA, Switzerland, June 21. — Red China told the United States today that 14 TJ. S. airmen and one American missionary, among JB3 Americans the State Department claims are being detained by the Reds, are either dead or presumed dead. Fifteen airmen Were admitted to be in. jail. Chinese delegates, in their fourth meeting with American representatives at the Geneva Far -Eastern Conference, also handed over a statement on the status of most of the others. Six Chinese Red Party Leaders Fired TOKYO, Japan, June 21.— The Chinese Communist Government has undergone one of its most drastic "reforms" with the firing of six party leaders, including the commander in Korea, Peiping Radio reported today. Mendes-France to Explain His Delay PARIS, France, June 21.— Premier Mendes-France will call his first full-scale Cabinet meeting4 shortly to explain why he slowed down his campaign to "win peace in Indo-China by July 20, informed sources said today. The premier-foreign minister met with Viet Niamese Premier Ngo Dinh Dien and Nguyen De, chief of Emperor Bao Dais Cabinet, to consider steps for a cease-fire in the seven-year war. West Germany to Permit U.S. Search BONN, Germany; July 21.— The West German Government has .agreed to permit United States warships. to search at sea German vessels whose agents do no "voluntarily" agree to embargo arms shipments to Guatemala, informed sources said today. French Troops in Amphibious Assault HANOI, Indo-China, June 21. — Hundreds of French troops made an amphibious assault on Van Coc Island in the Red River, 15 miles west of Hanoi, and wiped out an important Communist base for infiltrating the delta, the French High Command announced today. The assault began before dawn yesterday and fierce fighting continued today, authorities said. French Union troops reported slaying 38 Reds and capturing 39. Guatemala Orders Civilians to Defense TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, June 21. — Guatemalan labor .leaders today ordered truck drivers, railway workers and farmers to help defend the capital against anti-Communist rebels reported driving toward the city. The Guatemalan Government belittled the effects of the four-day-old invasion thus far, but admitted that Guatemala. City, bombed and strafed at least three times since Friday, was the invaders immediate target.
