VIRGINIAN gradually improved his position to gain closer contention leaving the final turn, responded to brisk urging to take command during the concluding strides and won going away. BLUE CHARGER held a slight lead at the furlong marker, faltered slightly when punished and was unable to withstand the winner. FIREBRAKE, never far back, moved up boldly to gain near even terms for the lead into the stretch, then held on willingly in a good effort. QUICK FIRE, outrun early, failed to make up appreciable ground. GLORIOUS EMMA saved ground to no avail. UPSTROKE, much used early, had little left. BROOKSHIRE retired steadily from a rapid start. PRECESSION began sluggishly. HAM HOCKS was always outrun. PRINCE TIP never threatened. JILLI0N BARELS alternated in pressing and setting the pace, gave way suddently inside the stretch and was no match for the top ones. ROYAL GANG, much used early, had little left. SALEMAKER sprinted into a clear lead immediately after the start, held sway to the concluding hedge under steady rating and increased his advantage thereafter, winning as his rider pleased. CRAG, permitted to settle into best stride, came to the outside for the drive, was unable to endanger the leader, but easily prevailed over the others. , ORIENTAL SUITE was unable to improve his position when hard ridden through the late stages: BLACK BID, forced to take up sharply when in close quarters on the clubhouse turn, failed to recover. PHOSPHOR and NOVA LUNAR were outrun. RED MARTLET was unable to keep up. STEP DANCE hobbled and lost his rider at the fifth jump. MONTEREY refused to break with his field. FOURTH RACE 5 1-2 FURLONGS. GALLAIR made the pace to the stretch under steady rating, shortened stride while tiring during the drive, but had enough left to prevail over FIRST FLOWER. The latter raced in nearest pursuit of the leader from the start, was unable to overtake the winner when shaken for the final test, but easily best the others. SEARCHING made up some ground when hard hustled through the late stages. LADY BALLADIER lacked a rally. PRECIOUS LADY and INDEMNIFY were outrun. DOE RUN never was dangerous. QUICK LUNCH, never far back, responded readily to assume command nearing the furlong marker and, in a long drive, held REVOLT safe. The latter came to the outside to gain near even terms for the lead entering the stretch, was unable to overtake the winner, but held on tenaciously to outgame DUC..DE FER. The latter remained next the inner rail after being replaced at the furlong marker and continued on gamely thereafter in a sharp effort. FULL FLIGHT closed resolutely and was overtaking the leaders. BUTTEVANT slipped through next the rail to attain the runner-up position leaving the final turn, but shortened stride when punished. WAR PIPER lacked speed as did BOBBY BROCATO PORTERHOUSE had no apparent mishap. ORDAINED was always outrun. GIGANTIC never was dangerous. CARD TRICK was through, after three furlongs. MENEMSHA quit.
