mx - ••--ij WEIGHING IN By EVAN shipman NEW YORK, N. Y„ June 21.— Down in the Blue Grass of Kentucky, where we were all of last week, they have some of the most impressive colts and fillies for the Keeneland sales we have seen in many a year. It would be a guess and undoubtedly a futile one, if we attempted to name the the one one colt colt or or filly filly who who will will be be in in mx - ••--ij the the one one colt colt or or filly filly who who will will be be in in the greatest demand when the sales get under way on July 26. The price paid for a yearling is no yardstick for measuring success of any youngster who will be part of the two-year-old crop in the following season. We have seen 75 yearlings who made good and also one at 5,-000 who did not. As we see this years sales the bulwarks of the market will be youngsters by Bull Lea, Polynesian, Count Fleet, Eighty Thirty, Roman, Heliopolis, Alibhai, Mahmoud, War Admiral, Bimelech, Menbw, Blue Swords, Royal Gem n. and still others who have been sending forth stakes winners year after year. In every season, however, there are sires who were good race horses and who will be sending their first full crops to the salesring. Among those this year can be listed Citation, Coaltown, Nasrullah, Noor, Royal Charger and Your Host. And, due to the limitation of space, we are going to confine this column to these newcomers. Your Host is certain to have appeal, but he has only two yearlings in the sale. One in the Mereworth Farm consignment and the other from the Stoner Creek Stud of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hertz. Mere-worth is returning to the Keeneland sales after a two-year absence and they will offer the cream of their crop. AAA Undoubtedly the most appealing newcomers to the salesring this year is the Calumet Farms Citation, one of the best race horses since the days of Man o War. His- Many Top Sires Represented in Sales Newcomers Have Real Buyer Appeal Citation Babes Could Be Sensational Nasrullahs, Noors, Real Good Lookers sational, but prices in those days were far different than they are in these lush years, when a yearling can go on to win breathtaking sums on the race course. Citation has four colts and two fillies in the Keeneland sales, and we are not going to attempt to predict which of them will have the greatest appeal in the salesring. What surprised us with those we have seen is that no two of them appear to be of the same conformation, although every one of them have the class and quality of top thoroughbreds. The colts are from Amiga, in the Leslie Combs n. consignment; another from the great mare, Boat, from the consignment of Harry B. Scott, Jr., whose filly sold last year for 9,000; E. E. Dale Shaffer will sell a colt out of the mare Look n Cook; Walnut Springs Farm of Clifford Mooers will offer a colt out of the mare Emblem. Stoner Creek Stud will sell a filly out of Reigh Fleet, and Leslie Combs H. will offer a filly out of Dark Justice. Those we have seen have been very impressive and it will be interesting to see what the colt out of Boat will bring as compared to the astonishing price her filly brought last year. Both this colt and the one from Amiga fill the eye the moment they are brought out for inspection. Dale Shaffers chestnut colt out of Look n Cook is another with distinct appeal and appears to be one of the best in Citations first crop. Breeding pundits will be intrigued no end that this photogenic yearling is inbred to Bull Dog This is typical breeding of Dale Shaffer, once master of the, famed Coldstream Stud. AAA The other newcomers, Royal Charger, Nasrullah and Noor, do not have too many youngsters in the sales. But it is pur impression those that are offered will be in big demand with those at the ringside. In fact, Royal Charger has only one and he is a handsome chestnut colt out of Bray Melody, by Coup de Lyon, in the Crown Crest consignment of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Reineman. Royal Charger is the sire of many outstanding horses, including the unfortunate Turn-to, who, in our opinion, would have been one of the best three-year-olds of the current season had he raced on. Bray Melody also produced, Happy Laughter, the daughter of Royal Charger, who was Englands leading three-year-old filly of 1953. This youngster in the Crown Crest group is a perfectly balanced, good-sized colt who has everything it takes to uphold the prestige of his sire, who is now standing at the Spendthrift Farm of Leslie Combs H. Nasrullah, now standing at Claiborne Farm, will have only a few representatives at Keeneland, but it is our opinion that the demand for them will be very keen. The one we did see is in the group of eight that will be sold by Stoner Creek Stud. He is a short-coupled, solid colt who has the quality that promises success on the* race course. We did not see the other two to be sold, but the Walnut Springs Farm of Clifford Mooers will offer a chestnut colt out of the good stakes winner, Lurine B., and E. K. Thomas will sell a bay filly out of China Face. AAA Noor, the son of Nasrullah whose many spirited races with Citation makes one of the brilliant pages of the racing of the last decade, will be represented by one .colt and four fillies. The colt is in the consignment of Leslie
