I was on a bunch of bad horses and going no place. So I decided to become a trainer, especially when I had a chance to buy Dandy Dan. I went to the sale at Belmont the other week, prepared to bid n one horse. It got to be more than I could afford so I settled for this one- I wanted a three-year-old who can go a distance of ground." Perlsweig now 28 is a native of Philadelphia and one of the few jockeys who can boast a high school education. While in school he used to spend his summers with show horses, especially in the Newton Square area of Pennsylvania, and in time graduated to riding them. He has performed in Madison Square Garden. Although he wanted to ,quit school, his parents insisted that he finish high school, which he says today, hes glad they made him do. But though he was under duress to complete his education, it didnt mean an end to riding. During the spring and fall he rode at the various Saturday hunt meetings and, in 1942 the summer before his graduation, he performed at Delaware Park, making his debut on the big time. After finishing high school, he rode for six more months before going into the Navy. He served for three years in the South Pacific and has the distinction of being one of the first 50 men to land in Japan. For this he received a citation from Admirals Halsey and Nimitz, but it didnt catch up to him until he was hospitalized with malaria. Danny was finally discharged on June 5, 1946, and on 18 was back in action, riding at Delaware Park. He continued for nine years in that trade, and his best season came when he was riding M; Newmeyers Turbine on whom he won many races. Since then there was nothing sensational in his career. With Dandy Dan, Dapper Dan hopes to make a new start. Perlsweig is married and he and his wife, Patricia, and son, Danny Jr., designate Long Branch their home in the nomadic life of a turfman. Prominent racing personalities from all branches will be very much in evidence this week with the opening of the four-day convention of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners at Asbury Park this morning. With president Hugh L- Mehorter presiding over the activities, the first days business session was transacted in record time. An afternoon meeting was sched-handled, it was canceled and the delegates came to the races. This years session, according to president Mehorter, is one of the best attended in the 20-year history of the NASRC. Mrs. Paul Serdar, wife of the chairman of the Illinois Racing Board, experienced the thrill of having her colors carried to an initial success in the steeplechase sport when her Omaha Traveler won at a Midwest hunt meeting. The fencer will now be pointed for the Arlington Hurdle Stakes on July 25. . . . Colin "Sandy" MacLeod, from Upperville, Va., was present Saturday for the running of the Regret. The former good racer, Versify, who is now on his farm, is in foal to Beau Gem. . . . Col. E. P. Bixer, who is racing a string of horses here in the care of Sol Rutchick, entertained a party of friends in his parterre box. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Straus and Dr. Robert Revanati. Pat Kelly, former manager of the Jockeys Guild, is here for a few days as personal liaison man for Howard Reine-mans Crown Crest Farm. . . . Harry Isaacs made a flying trip from Baltimore for the week- end and, though his I Salute failed in the stake, Ifaboy came through with a win in an earlier race. . . . The new TV set in the press lounge came in for a lot of dial twisting plus arguments Saturday, what with the running of the Gazelle Stakes, the Baltusrol Golf tournament and the ball game. Some sort of a nadir was reached when Charlie TJlbig came up with a wrestling match, . in the afternoon no less, and precipitated a near riot.
