Furgol, New U.S. Open King, Will Play at Tarn OShanter NEW YORK, N. Y., June 21 UP.— Ed Furgol, the new U.S. Open golf champion, took issue today with the pre-tournament predictions of experts who had said a total of 280 would win the event. "Such predictions were asinine," he said. "Anybody who had taken a look at that long layout certainly wouldnt have made such a statement. Thats a* long and tricky course." Furgol, who won with a 72-hole total of 284; left by plane for St. Louis where he will resume his job as a teaching pro at the Westwood Country Club in suburban Clayton, Mo. Ben Hogan had said before the tournament that his own record 276 score probably would be broken at the Baltusrol course. Furgol said he definitely would play in "the Ail-American and World tournaments at Tam OShanter Country Club in Chicago in August. He also said at no time from start to finish had he been afraid of either of the favorites, Hogan or Sam Snead. "I wasnt afraid of anyone," he said. "Those guys are human just like me. Competition was beside, the point. I knew if I could keep control of my emotions, I could get the same done and win." |
