Sprinters to Clash In Livonia Stakes Tonsina Pegged Pre-Race Choice Over Eight Rivals At Detroit Course Today By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 17. T. Alie Grissoms Tonsina, recent winner of the Rose Leaves Stakes, heads a field of nine quick three-year-olds slated to meet here Saturday afternoon in the second running of the ,500 Livonia Stakes. Under the allowance conditions of the six furlongs event, Tonsina will shoulder 114 pounds, spotting each of her rivals weight. Tonsina, a daughter of Buster and Spindrift, was successful in four outings during her juvenile campaign and she was a good class winner in California, before she annexed the Rose Leaves last Saturday. A versatile performer on any type footing, the Grissom filly was sharp enough to beat nine older rivals in the Rose Leaves, stepping that three-quarters mile through the mud in 1:13. Gilligan to Ride Tonsina Trainer Vesfer R. Wright, tied with B. H. Wise for top conditioning honors when the racing began here today, announced this morning that Larry Gilligan will have the mount on Tonsina in the Livonia. Henry Forrest, Covington, Ky., turfman, will saddle an entry in the headliner, J. H. Homans improving Jeffrey J. S., 113, and J. C. Pollards Itinerant, pegged at 110 pounds. Forrest stated that jockey Lamey Hansman will guide either Jeffrey J. S. or Itinerant in the sophomore stake. Others slated to go postward are Ralph A. Cook and apprentice Johnny Sellers, presently in a close duel for major saddle honors, have mounts in the Livonia Stakes. Cook wiH be astride Our Hines, a good winner at Keeneland and Churchill Downs before transfer to the Motor City while Sellers is engaged for Chic Devil. Jockey Jimmy King rides Valient Step and Emil Roy who has a high percentage during the current meeting, will guide Tile King. No reinsmen had been named late today forGay Warbler and Early Foot. Major opposition for Tonsina probably will be provided by Tile King and Our Hines. The Parachek colt, a son of Alorter and Imperial Play, trimmed a fair field of sprinters- here June 14, stepping along through a heavy track in 1:15 under 113 pounds burden. Our Hines raced disap-pointly in his local engagement, finishing fifth behind Trim Destiny and Jeffrey J. S. on a, slow track, footing he didnt like. Racing secretary Charles J. McLennan and the- members of his staff arranged an excellent supporting card, the sport shaping up as quite the best of the current meeting. The Livonia Rotary Purse at six furlongs for three-year-olds and up and the ninth race, a mile and one-half test for four-year-olds and older loom as interesting events. Marion H. VanBergs Knights Reward, and Foxie Jeanie make up a classy entry for the Livonia Rotary Purse. Knights Reward, a six-year-old Reaping Reward gelding,, gets in the supporting offering with 116 pounds while Foxie Jeanie, a speedy four-year-old Equifox filly, will take up 108 pounds. Knights Reward Winner on June 6 Knights Reward, a winner in Chicago before shipment here, won a host of supporters on June 4 when he soundly trounced Speed O Light, By Far, Easy Paddy and Second Avenue, among others, in the one mile Mechanical Day Purse, whirling along in 1:37, a fractional part of the second off the track record. I Foxie Jeanie, who had a rough trip in the Rose Leaves Stakes, displayed high speed here early in the meeting while annexing the three-quarters mile Flint Purse. The VanBerg filly raced along in 1:10 with Trip Lightly, Princess Trace, Equimore, Second Avenue, Endon, Orchid and Greatest trailing her to the wire. Trip Lightly will carry the White Stable silks against the VanBerg duo and she is to take up 105 pounds. Tamarack Stable will rely on the hard-hitting Bright Shoes, 113, and the Buhl Stables Second Avenue is pegged at 116 pounds. Grace Kosibas Sub Factor, 110, and Duke Singers speedy four-year-old colt, Hangover, high weight at 122 pounds, completes the probable Livonia Rotary Purse starting band. The Grissom and Paddock pair, Alie-Ed and Tomi Blu, along with Spoon and Flynns Prince Onsort and W. H. Grissom, Jr.s Heres Colina appear to hold royal chances for victory in the marathon ninth. J. P. Millers Red Rock, VanBerg Stables Gumptious, Wise and Sickings Lieutenant, and Mrs. J. Adlers No Skis complete the overnight field.
