New England h By Fred Galiani Pilot Model Proves Bargain Claim Develops Into Consistent Performer Must Be Ridden With Special Saddle NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket," R. I., June 17. Although he is no Stymie, or even a Marriage yet, Pilot Model is still the best claim made in New England this year, if not maybe in the entire East. On March 25 past, at Lincoln Downs, trainer George Handy reached in and for ,500 grabbed the three-year-old son of Jet Pilot Jersey Isle, by Milkman. Since then Pilot Model has earned 1,950, and if he does nothine else this year he has more than repaid his purchase price. Since he was haltered by the young Sekonk, Mass., trainer for the account of Mrs. R. V. Robidoue, of Warwick, R. I., the colt has won six races, been second twice and out of the money only once. There is a valid excuse for Pilot Models lone poor effort. The colt is on the sway-backed side, and thus must have a, special, short saddle. On the afternoon he was unplaced at Lincoln Downs a long saddle was put on him and it must have been digging him in the kidneys, for after showing his brief early speed he stopped abruptly. Pilot Model fits into the category of a bargain claim, not because he has earned so much money, but rather that he is consistently showing improvement and moving up the ladder in class. His next start after being haltered was for ,500, which he won, and since then he has raced himself out of the claiming ranks. In his last four starts he has been performing in allowance company. This past Wednesday he showed remarkable tenacity to come again and defeat Ka-kuza Ridge by a nose. Before that he finished second to Star Rover, who has demonstrated he is one of the better three-year-old sprinters by his smashing win in he Select Handicap. In most of his successes Pilot Model was equipped with an extremely short saddle, which was owned by jockey Mike Danish But the latter recently left for Detroit and Handy had to improvise. On Wednesday he got the shortest saddle he could find and pushed it up as far as possible on the horses withers, so it wouldnt dig him in his back. Handy is having a special type saddle made for Pilot Model. "Hes a good horse," comments Handy. "Hes awfully game and he can run either way, on the front end or from behind. But Continued on Page Fifty-Fire New England By FRED .GALIANI Continued from Page Seven he has so much early speed that he always gets out in front, with the boy just sitting on him. Hes game. When a horse gets to him hell let him get about a head in front and then he comes on again and gives all hes got. I claimed him from Bill Rodgers, who took him from French Lamoreux. Pilot Model had developed a big hock and it was doubtful if he would ever run again, which is probably the reason they put him in so cheap. Because he is a real good sort Ill keep him in sprints until he runs out of races. When the conditions eliminate him from dashes, Ill try him at a distance. Pilot Model has gone seven furlongs and I believe hell even get a mile or a mile and 70 yards." The horse has sure been one of the most profitable claims ever made by Handy. He may even turn out to be the claim of the year. L. R. Harrisons Paddys Hat dropped dead on the clubhouse turn following the first race on Thursday. Apprentice Johnny Raia said after the race, while walking up the runway to the paddock, "I heard him moaning between the three -sixteenths and eighth poles, so I immediately let up on riding him. I didnt know what was the matter. When we got to the turn and pulled up, he just keeled over, lay there groaning atew moments and then was quiet. He tossed me right over his head, but I landed on my feet. It sure was an awful experience." Dr. Cole, the veterinarian, reported the colt died of a heart attack. In most cases, he said, an autopsy will show that the large . aorta to the heart has broken and the horse dies of an internal hemorrhage, his lungs being filled with blood. Joe Mergler, assistant trainer to Downy Bosnal is due in with Montpeliers Saratoga from Delaware oveTfT-he- week end. Exercise boy Nick Trombero will accompany the shipment. . .Boston Doge, being readied for a comeback, breezed three furlongs in :37 this morning over the fast track... Remarkable resemblance between S. Booths Miss Ada, who is racing, here, and J. M. Grieves stakes winning Miss Joanne, who performed on this beat a few years ago. Both of the mares are brown with a star and flop ears. In addition to looking almost alike, they ran alike, coming from far out of it to win. Miss Ada scored in her last outing after being disqualified from the first spot in a previous race. Miss Ada? a daughter of Billings," is trained by M. L. Fallon... New faces will be much in evidence at the Rockingham meeting, with some 200 horses who have been performing in Delaware and Maryland coming up for the session. Celerity Bound, dam of Rarintgo, winner of his maiden race in the fourth event yesterday, has never been to the races. She sustained-a serious injury while a yearling, which forced owner Oscar Foster to use her for breeding purposes on his Fort Worth, Texas, farm. The sire of Rarintgo is Mia Mia, who raced in New England for J. O. Hart. . .George Handy and his wife will be hosts to friends, including members of the press, owners and trainers, at a lawn party Sunday at his residence in Seekonk. . .Lila Phillips has named two of her juveniles, Dream You All and Overland, for the Narragan-sett Nursery Stakes on June 25. . .Isle of Bond, who is entered in Saturdays King Philip Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth, holds the track record of lAZVs for the distance, which was set last , December.
