Ruhe Returns to His Winning Ways Balmoral Triumph First Since 1953 Comes From Last Place to Capture Grass Race Going Away; Beats Eternal Frolic WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., June 17. The seven-year-old Ruhe, who has turned in some fine efforts on Chicago tracks in the past, made an excellent comeback here this afternoon when he ac-ounted for the Iron Mask Handicap, feature race of the day. Making his third appearance of the year, Ruhe, who was coupled with the imported My Beau as the Hasty House Farm entry, came from last place in the six-furlong grass race to register by two and one-half lengths under the reinsmanship of jockey Job Dean Jes-sop. Eternal Frolic reached second place and No Return,. the favorite, was third. Ruhe ran the distance in the good time of 1:11 and the entry paid 3.80. In victory Ruhe stamped himself as once again being a strong contender for the coming grass stakes hereabouts. As usual he was off slowly and was three lengths back of the next to last horse after a quarter had been raced. He did not seem to have much chance even on the stretch turn, but suddenly unleashed a charge that could not be denied. His running mate, My Beau, making his first start in" this country, was ridden by John Adams and showed speed in spots, but failed to be a real contender. v No Return in Stretch Lead A field of 10 went to the post in the Iron Mask and No Return drew out of the pack after having gone a quarter to open up a two-length margin. Steve Brooks held to the rail with No Return in the stretch and the gelding was still well in front an eighth out. Then came Ruhe and Eternal Frolic with their strong finishes. Fine summer-like weather was in order for the days doings and the attendance was tabbed at 9,445. The largest Daily Trouble payoff of the meeting was registered when Normas First and Kissin Kate, the winning combination, paid 95.20. Normas First, a two-year-old, went to the f?ont early in the initial number and led all the way under Al Poparas handling, while Kissin Kate came down the middle of the track in the second to best Educt. Bobby Perraane rode Kissin Kate. The third was for maiden two-year-old fillies and Jacalu, a ,000 "purchase at the yearling sales last season, led most of the way to win with J. Ralph Adams up. Haze, a first time starter, was the favorite but Was never prominent in the five-furlong dash. Beldic graduated from the maiden ranks when he beat a band of three -year-olds who had formerly notched a victory when he took the fourth. Jockey Don Wagner had Beldic on the rail throughout and he outpowered the well played Etheridge, who had reached the head end in the last sixteenth. Beldic was running for Nathan Rabin, who claimed her last out. Jockey Popara piloted his second winner of the afternoon in Maid of Cotton, a well-played second choice, in the fifth. Intelligent made the pace, but Maid of Cotton caught her in the last sixteenth to score by a half-length. Johns Mabel, the favorite, tired.
