Ireland Hugh Lupus and P ana slipper in Return Meeting in Wednesdays Irish Derby By TOM COOPER Dublin Correspondent, Daily Racing Form DUBLIN, Ireland. Although there were 29 acceptors for Wednesdays Irish Derby, it is unlikely that more than 15 runners will line up at The Curragh. Discussion on the race is mainly concentrated on the return-meeting of Hugh Lupus and Panaslipper. If the former should win the race, -as appears probable, his supporters will have greatly strengthened grounds for their belief that he would have defeated Phil Drake in the Derby at Epsom if ill luck had not prevented him from going to the post. The Irish Derby, however, must not be regarded as a two-horse race. Despite his bad showing at Epsom, the Pre n d ergast- trained Daemon cannot be left out of anybodys calculations, while last week a new star appeared on the horizon. This is yet another colt from the McGrath stable which appears able to produce colts of classic standard like a conjuror producing rabbits out of a hat. Mrs. E. McGraths Arctic Time won the 10-furlong semi-classic race, the Gallinule Plate, at The Curragh in the manner which stamps any horses performance as being up to classic standard. A In the parade ring it was apparent that Arctic Times preparation had been planned for some future event. Although the colt looked extremely well, he did not appear to be as fit and hard as most of the other runners. Nevertheless, conceding weight all around and giving as much as 10 pounds to the greatly fancied Tara, Arctic Time ran on strongly in the last furlong to score by a length and a half over Tara. It was planned to fly Arctic Time and Windsor Sun to race at the Royal Ascot meeting this week, but because of its postponement it is likely that Seamus McGrath will saddle both colts, in addition to Panaslipper, in the Irish Derby. At 11:30 on the morning of the Irish Derby The Curragh Bloodstock Agency will hold a dispersal sale of horses in training, broodmares, foals and yearlings, etc., which belonged to the late Hubert Hartigan. Although there are only 21 lots in the catalogue, a large attendance is anticipated, as some of the horses are bound to fetch high prices. Centerpiece of the sale will be the six-year-old mare Pampa, who is to be sold to dissolve a partnership between Mrs. Hartigan and Prince Aly Khan. Pampa is an attractive proposition for the stud on any market, as she was one of the fastest fillies on the race course we have had - in either England or Ireland for many years. Racing consistently from two to four, she carried huge weights successfully in handicaps in Ireland, and as a four-year-old was beaten a mere neck in the Nunthorpe Sweep Stakes at York, generally regarded as one of the most difficult sprints of the year to win. AAA Furthermore, Pampa has a good pedigree. Her dam, the Gold Bridge mare Pan-cha bred six ""other winners, including Maharaj Kumar, who won 11 races and has proved a" sound sure of winners. Apart from all this, Pampa has now been certified in foal to Tulyar. Among the other wellbred, mares in the catalogue is the good producer Sword Knot, who is a half-sister to Challenger n., a successful stallion in the U.S.A. Sword Knot, like some of the other mares listed, also has a foal and a yearling coming up for sale on the same day. Among the yearlings, but rather backward for this time of year, is an attractive filly by My Babu out of Brave Deal, a half-sister to the Derby winner, Straight Deal. AAA Blarney: Among visitors to The Curragh was A. R. Miles; he comes from South Australia, and is on a world tour. Among other horses, he owns Co-Star, holder of the world time record for two miles over hurdles 3:31 . . . We would like to have known the time of the two-year-old Black Shield for the first three furlongs at Naas last week. This speedy son of Abernant and Lily Marlene must have been six or eight lengths in front at this distance. He was considered by many to be a shade unlucky in being caught and beaten by the shortest of noses ... A Royal Charger half-sister to this colt is due to appear in the Nydric Stud lot at Saratoga . . . We will be surprised if Prince Aly Khan is notTamong the bidders for Pampa.
