Del Mar Futurity Nears Record 0,000 Gross September Fixture Also Boasts Largest Number of Eiigibles, 142 DEL MAR, Calif., June" 1 With a record 148 top-flight two-year-olds kept eligible, the tenth running of the Del- Mar Futurity, highlight of the summer season opening here July 24, will approach a record 0,000-gross purse figure, president and general manager Don Smith announced today. The Futurity, at six furlongs, annually attracts an outstanding field of juveniles and rates national prestige in this regard. It will be renewed next September 7. Value of the event to date is 9,180, realized from 0,000 added by the Del Mar Tuff Club plus nominating and eligibility fees. This figure will be swelled with starting and entering fees and the possibility of supplementary nominations, at ,000 each, due 10 days before the running of the stake. Since its inaugural running in 1948, the .Futurity has developed into one of the most coveted two-year-old stakes in the nation. Previous winners have been Star Fiddle, Your Host, Patch, Big Noise, Hour Regards, Double Speed, Blue Ruler and Blen Host. Last year, the spectacular Prince Khaled sizzled six furlongs in 1:08 to win the race, but was disqualified for interference. Ross and Klipsteins Swirling Abbey was awarded the winners share of the gross purse of 9,100. Among the 142 candidates for this years renewal are 22 youngsters who already have exhibited winning talent. Included are the stakes-winning Royal Clipper and highly promising Old Pueblo, as well as Aliwar, Beach City, Beau Madison v County Diamond. Cowboy Book, Desert Melody, Enunciate, Fire Alarm, Gus L., Lucky H. L., Orbits Image, Regal Lark, Royal Tempter, Re-Armed Bim, Sullys Secret, Spider Trail, Silky Sullivan, Strong Bay, Tan Tartan and True Poise.
