Burnt Child Favored at Hazel Park JAMES L. PADDOCK The Louisville owners Golden Apollo made it two victories in a row when he accounted for Saturdays third race at Hazel Park. Andrews Ace Just Missed Last Out Appears Ready for Initial Score of Year; Beau Carve! And River Gate Contenders By Staff Correspondent HAZEL PARK, Mich., June 1. Waldo Andrews Burnt Child, American record holder for six furlongs on the grass, tops a field of 10 for Mondays top offering, the six and one-half furlongs Lincoln Park Purse, being a solid pre-race choice to pick up his first purse of the current season. Arrayed against the Menow gelding will be M. H. VanBergs pair of Greek Sword and River Gate, Elias Bros. Obnoxious, N.R. Lows Akboy, Mrs-. Elizabeth Muck-lers Homeplace, R. C. Groffs Modest Marge, Mrs. D. Sukundos World Series, Mrs. C. F. Stone and Mrs. W. J. Nolans Beau Carvel and Mrs. N. J. Hernandez Baby Brier. Beau Carvel Third in Dash Burnt Child has been unsuccessful in two ventures postward during the opening week of the meeting, first catching a slow" track and being beaten off in the Grosse Point Purse. The Dave Holstein-trained sprinter then came back with a strong effort on Wednesday to finish in the runner-up position being just a nose shy at the end of six furlongs. Burnt Child was defeated by Even Stroke in 1:14, in what proved to be the nearest thing to a dead heat possible. Monday will find Burnt Child breaking from the No. 1 post position and thus will be able to utilize all his early speed to full advantage and attempt to make a runaway race of it. Last year he was one of the most consistent sprinters in the nation for in 36 starts he won 11 times, placed in seven, and finished third twice, while amassing some 7,000. Beau Carvel figures to give the choice Continued on Page Fifty -One j Burnt Chield Looms Favorite Jn Hazel Lincoln Park Purse Continued from Page Seven the biggest argument, for inthe Highland Park Purse the four-year-old altered son of Count Domino Feather Stitch was third to Burnt Child, being jus,t two and one-half lengths back- at the end of the three-quarters. This is the geldings first outing here since arriving from Chicago where he finished third to such good sprinters as Two Fisted and Sure Welcome, being defeated just a half length for all of it. River Gate and Greek Sword also have ,the benefit of a race over the track with the former being soundly defeated by Roman Spy in the Highland Park which "proved to be the fastest three-quarters mile race of the meeting. Inasmuch as the Djed-dah gelding will not be meeting anything quite as quick as Roman Spy in Mondays Lincoln Park Purse his stock should naturally take quite a jump here. The fashionably bred Homeplace will be making his debut over this five-eighths oval in this event, the Nasrullah gelding being pointed expressly for the Hazel Park Mile. Last winter at Hialeah, Homeplace turned back a field of 5,000 claimers at a mile and one-eighth and a repetition of this race would place him right there.
