BARDSTOWN broke well and was immediately taken under strong restraint, being rated along with Hartack timing his moves in company with the pace-setting RICCI TAVI. BARDSTOWN was headed by THIRD BROTHER between calls at the three and one-half furlongs marker before his rider put him to pressure and he regained a brief advantage saving ground on the turn, then tired and could not keep up, despite punishment, in the stretch drive. RICCI TAVI saved ground and was repeatedly taken in hand to be reserved for the first half-mile, then he, too, could not recover in time to meet the early challenge from the winner, and weakened under pressure thereafter.
