: , Wexler Gives Up Owners License Ascot Park Officials Cited By Ohio Board for Allowing Bookmaking on Grounds CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 1. Mprris "Mushy" Wexler, Cleveland restaurant proprietor, voluntarily surrendered his Ohio race horse owners license and Ascot Park was cited for permitting "excessive bookmaking" on its premises at a meeting of the state racing commission at Thistle Down Friday. Wexler was issued an owners license April 4, despite the recommendation of the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau that he not be licensed in that sport in any capacity. Spencer J. Drayton, head of the TRPB, protested and he was invited to present any evidence he may have to support his stand to the commission at a meeting a week ago in Columbus. At that time, Drayton supplied a voluminous file of reports, testimony and photostatic copies of newspaper clippings to each member of the commission. The board agreed to study the file and . to decide Friday whether to cite Wexler for a hearing. Voluntary forfeiture of his license made such a decision unnecessary. Even in the face of his surrender of the license, Wexler contends that during the 30 years he had raced horses previously he has never been called before the stewards at any track for any reason. He said the license "isnt worth the trouble" of a long hearing and possible court case. Drayton objects to any license issued to him because of his previous associations and because he formerly headed a race wire service, which is now defunct. The TRPB chief also claims that the Cleve-" lander raced horses when jhey were registered under the names of other owners. Ascot Park officials cited to appear before the board at a future meeting are president Horace S. Adams and general manager Peter ODonnell. Also cited was G. S. Waddell, Ascot Parks chief security officer. Waddell is chief deputy for the Summit County sheriff. No date has been set for the hearing of the Ascot Park case but chairman Zoltan Gombos indicated it would be held late this month, after the board membexs return from the convention of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners in California. Ascot Park concluded its racing season last Monday.
