Grass Course Runners In River Downs Feature Flying First to Engage Placer, Mr. Swank in Clermont County By Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, Cincinnati, Ohio, June I. Seven horses will test the grass course in the featured Clermont County Purse Monday afternoon as River Downs moves into its second full week of racing. The main event is at seven furlongs and will go as the seventh race. This field carries balance but three horses inparticular may vie for the favorites mantle. Pete Maxwells Flying First makes his : second start on the turf here and cant be ignored despite a third place finish on the grass here Wednesday behind Arioso II. The five-year-old son of Flying Doug holds the turf course record for a mile, established July 7, 1956 when he made the trip in 1:37. Flying First, carrying 112 pounds, was a length and one-half behind Aribso II. as he established the record for seven furlongs at 1:25. This speedster won five allowance races last year and though he will carry 117 figures to be among the main challengers. T. E. Bischoff s Placer may go well here. The four-year-old son of Dogpatch was unplaced here in the Memorial Day Handicap over six furlongs which was impressively won by Mintaway in 1:10 but he is highly regarded and jockey Gil Roser will do the booting. Mr. Swank, racing in the interest of E, J. Moore, was second to Apasay in his first start here last Tuesday, a five and one-half furlongs assignment which was handled in 1:06. The four-year-old son of The Dude won two races last year and could reach the winners circle Monday if he finds racing room, a factor that was missing the last trip. Horses making their first start of the River Downs season include M. Lauses Cab Happy, who hasnt won since August; Roy Cautherns Eastern Dandy, a two-time winner in 56; Orin Troianis Ride Red, a four-year-old colt who won at Sunshine Park in Florida and Leo Wagners J. William, a four-year-old Harmony Now gelding who reached the winners circle at Cranwood last fall. The Netherland Hilton Purse is the cofeature with six two-year-olds going post-ward at five furlongs. Top contender for the winners prize will be Doug Davis Jr.s Roman Bow, who will pack 121 pounds including jockey Neil Johnson. RomanJow was an impressive two-time winner at Keeneland this spring.
