Monmouth Opens Meet on June 11 Only Jersey Track Offering Flat, Turf and Hurdle Sport; Add Matriarch to Stakes List OCEANPORT, N. J.. June 1. Monmouth Park, one of the nations most beautiful race courses, begins its 12th annual summer meeting on Tuesday, June 11. The only race course in New Jersey to offer flat, turf and hurdle racing, modern Monmouth Park will feature 19 stakes on the main strip worth a record added value of 10,000 for this track, and two events for the. hurdle specialists including the invitational 0,-000 Midsummer Hurdle Handicap on August 2. A "new look" will greet patrons .at the main grandstand entrance. Two streamlined shelters have replaced the old structure which housed the main grandstand entrance turnstiles. Quick "getaway" for grandstand valet parking will be effected with the new entrance designed for that purpose. Located in northern New Jerseys thriving seashore area, only two miles from the Atlantic Ocean, Monmouth Park can be reached with ease and rapidity by patrons in the Metropolitan area. Superior highways link Monmouth Park with the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. Run Matriarch on August 6 New on the stakes agenda this summer is the 5,000 Matriarch, for fillies and mares at a mile and one-sixteenth onAugust 6. This is the third of the stakes fixtures designed for seasoned distaff performers exclusively. The other features for fillies and mares are the Regret and Molly Pitcher handicaps. Biggest offering of the 50-day session is the 00,000 Monmouth Handicap at a mile and one-quarter on July 13. Last year the Monmouth went to Nashua, the worlds leading money winner with earnings of ,288,565. Among the major candidates for the Monmouth, which is for three-year-olds and upward, and one of the cornerstones for Handicap division title prospects, is the Florida-bred Needles, last years sophomore champion. Trainer Hugh Fontaine is optimistic about readying Needles for the "Hundred-Grander." A mild seizure of coughing forced his colt into temporary inaction but it is expected he will, soon resume training. The 0,000 Sapling Stakes,, closing day feature on August 7, is the richest test of five offerings for two-year-olds. Former victors include Blue Peter, Battlefield, Royal Coinage, Needles and King Hairan. Charlton Clays Leallah, champion two-year-old filly of 1956, achieved the first of four stakes successes in the 0,000 Colleen, which this summer will be run on June 29. Post time each day will be 2:30 p.m. EDT.
