. i Mr. Fantastic Tallies by One Length in Hazel s June Cap Mildly Surprises; Runner-Up Honors Go to Almas Heart; Favored Roman Spy Is Third By BUD LYON HAZEL PARK, Mich., June 1. MivFan-tastic, owned by the JLexington, Ky., pa-torn, Gilbert S. Killpatrick, mildly surprised the 16,046 fans assembled here this blustery afternoon by driving under the line of finish a one-length winnex in the ,000 June Handicap at six furlongs; Runner-up honors fell to A. Saucier Jr.s Almas Heart, which finished four and one-quarter lengths before the favorite, E. J. Grosfields Roman Spy. On hand to greet the winner in appropriate ceremonies following the finish was the-junior TJ. S. senator from Michigan, Patrick V. McNamara, who presented the owner with a handsome trophy. Mr. Fantastic, a four-year-old -gelded son of With Pleasure Blue Hedda, was lightly rigged with just 110 pounds, most of which was Roberto Gonzalez, and was right with the leaders from the outset of the three-quarter mile dash. In fact, the lightly raced gelding broke on top, but displayed a bit of temperament on approaching the first turn of this five-eighths mie oval in attempting to run out. Gonzalez Uses Right Strategy Gonzalez immediately straightened him away and drove up along the inside of the fleet-footed choice and ran him down before going three furlongs. This bit of strategy proved to be a major item in gaining the. ultimate victory, for the runner-up was gradually getting to Mr. Fantastic in the closing strides so that the ground saved through the early stages no doubt provided theKillpatrick color-bearer with his one-length margin at the end. Todays effort was but the third start of the year for Mr. Fantastic and his second win, he having previously connected at Churchill Downs this spring and the ,100 winners share of th epurse brought his earnings for the year to ,450. Time for the six furlongs was 1:15, fair considering the "good" condition of the racing strip, and the winner, as third choice in the wagering, paid 0.20. The two highweights of the field, Roman Spy at 119, and Hangover at 120 pounds, failed to live up to expectations, for the latter was definitely through after showing speed for a quarter mile and the former giving up completely after racing with the winner for a half mile. In the fourth race, second best offering on the nine-race program, Vincent L. Creals Agreed maintained an unblemished record for the current season by registering his second victory at the expense of the favored Earl B. Smiths Blue Colonel, which he led under the line of finish by a length and one-half. Preliminaries found Kenneth Burkharts Tempts Image accounting for the six furlongs opener at 3.20, and Robert E. Ales-sios Starlight OF earning his maiden victory at four furlongs while paying off at 5.80.
