Bally Ache Charges Home In Comely at Jamaica Erb Has Fruchtman Filly Length Clear of Tufanhai at Finish Line By BOB HORWOOD JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 6.— Literally diving between horses at the quarter pole, Leonard D. Fruchtmans Bally Ache charged to a popular triumph in todays 7,750 Comely Stakes. With Dave Erb urging him along Bally Ache reached the end of the 5 furlongs a length before Pebble-brook Farms Tufanhai. who led Wheatley Stables Progressing by the same margin. Midas Farms Ira Eaker finished two lengths out of the money after setting the pace well into the stretch. Favored by the sunny-day crowd of 20,492, Bally Ache paid .50 and stepped the distance in :59V5 on a fast track that was deep and tiring. Eight of the nine juveniles in the Comely had run in :59 or better at this track in earlier races. Todays victory rewarded Fruchtman, who is a native of Toledo, Ohio, with a gross prize of | 1,537.50, including 75 in fees. Leonard P. Sassos Penowa Rullah, who was a strong second choice in the Comely, broke slowly from his outside post position, raced wide and finished sixth. Tufanhai was first out of the gate at the start of the Comely, but was quickly passed by Ira Eaker, who opened a daylight lead in the run to the far turn. Tufanhai was in second place, closely followed by Niequest. who led Bally Ache by another length, while Penowa Rullah moved up to fifth place on the outside at the end of the opening quarter. Ira Eaker continued to lead around the turns to the stretch, still a couple of lengths before Tufanhai. while Erb sent Bally Ache between horses, a move that was helped as Penowa Rullah went wide after moving into third place. Progressing was still far back at the final bend and just beginning to move. Running with his head low, Bally Ache surged forward with a determined rush that caught the tiring Ira Eaker just above the furlong pole. Tufanhai also finished well, but was unable to threaten Bally Ache. Progressing finished fastest of all, though never looking like a winner.
