Shoemaker Nations Leading Jockey Has 111 Victories I I Through April 30 Four-Time Riding Champion Holds Eight-Win Margin on Grant; Other Leaders Same m $ By Staff Correspondent William Shoemaker, four-time national riding champion, once again has taken over first place among the American jockeys, statistics compiled exclusively by Daily Racing Form reveal. At the conclusion of the racing of April 30, "Shoe" had 111 winners for the first four months of this year, giving him an eight-win edge over Howard Grant, who had 103, and a 10-win advantage on Bobby Ussery who was the leader at the previous tabulation. Shoemakers ascendancy to first place was the only change among the national leaders during the month of April. C. V. I Whitney continued as the leading owner : with 89,540; the four-year-old was Hillsdale the top thoroughbred with 71,150, and Vester R. "Tennessee" Wright headed I the trainers list with 59 saddling successes. The Texan -Born Shoemaker was astride ■ 46 winners during the month of April, rising from fourth place in the standings at the beginning of the month to the top rung at months end. Grant, who maintained his second-place status, booted home 36 I during the month, while Ussery had 24 | tallies. The veteran Eddie Arcaro, with an I average of better than a winner per day, moved into fourth place and had 86 wins iS to his credit, two more than Bill Hartack, II three-time national leader. ;j| Another rider, who made rapid progress B during the month was Herberto Hinojosa, who while riding at Jefferson Downs near f- New Orleans, booted home 42 winners to B increase his seasons total to 75. Shoemaker turned in the best riding feat I of the season when he booted home six I winners out of eight mounts on April 4 B at Jamaica. Grant had "four-for-eight" at w Laurel April 15, while Arcaro had a pair of "four-for-fives" at Jamaica on April 10 and ; April 11. Hartack had "four-for-seven" April 17 and 22 at Keeneland, while Hino-6 josa had "four-for-five" April 9 and two I days later had "four-for-seven." Whitney Total 89,540 The Whitney stable raced almost ex-S clusively at Tanforan the past month and I earned a total of ,640 through four wins, * seven seconds and one third to up its seasonal total to 89,540. Calumet added 8,-045 and is second in the owners standing i with 49,084. The stable of William Hal Bishop moved from fifth to third place, the Anna, 111.-owner winning 4,100 to increase his 1959 total to 44,707. The stable, which paced I the owners at Laurel, added 16 wins, 15 seconds and 26 thirds to its record during April. I Msr. Mary Elizabeth Persons Llangollen Farm is fourth with 22,330; the C. W. I Smith Enterprises, owner of Hillsdale, is next with 71,750, followed by Brunetti "I and Piarulli, owners of Vertex, with 56,- | 170. The stable of Mrs. Ada L. Rice which did not appear among the 15 leaders at the previous tabulation, now ranks eighth with 50,206. Hillsdale, who was idle during the month as was practically all the horses among the leaders, has 71,150 to his credit. Vertex has 56,170; Terrang, 51,050, Bardstown, 41,300, and the filly, Silver Spoon, 31,700. The trainers race has tightened up considerably. Wright, who saddled nine winners for a 1959 total of 59, is only five ahead of Bishop, who sent out 16 winners at Laurel to make deep inroads into Wrights lead. Alex H. Johnston, who maintained his hold on third place, sent out 17 winners, while Hirsch Jacobs, having one of his best seasons, moved up from fifteenth to fourth place, sending out 22 winners to hike his seasons total to 40. Frank H. Merrill Jr., who led in number of ■ winners saddled during 1958, is going m "great guns" on the Canadian circuit.
