i BARDSTOWN— Handicap star from the Calumet Farm string is bedded down at Washington Park. Calumet Farm Takes On Full Strength at Washington Park Forty-Two Await Balmoral 4 Opening May 18; Bardstown, On-and-On, Rosewood Arrive HOMEWOOD, 111.. May 6.— Mrs. Gene Markeys Calumet Farm took on full strength at Washington Park for the approaching Balmoral spring meeting, which opens on Monday, May 18, with the arrival by van from Kentucky of 18 thoroughbreds, headed by the popular handicap star, Bardstown; the stables controversial three-year-old threat, On-and-On, and the fine mare. Rosewood. Twenty-four H. A. "Jimmy" Jones-trained horses are now quartered at the local course awaiting the opening - of Chicagos anual coordinated 97-day meeting of Balmoral - Arlington - Washington parks. Won 1956 Equipoise Mile Bardstown is no stranger to Chicago racing patrons, the hard-hitting Alibhai gelding having acounted for his first stakes triumph in the 1956 Equipoise Mile at Arlington Park. The following winter, the gelding captured the Widener and Gulf-stream Park Handicaps. He was injured most of last year, but did manage a second-place finish to Swoons Son in the Equipoise before bouncing back with much of his old verve last winter at Florida, winning the Tropical Park and Widener handicaps. On-and-On. a likely candidate for Balmorals opening-day, 5,000-added Tri-State Stakes for three-year-olds at six furlongs, won his latest attempt on Derby Day at Churchill Downs after being a last-day declaration from the Run for the i Roses. The Nasrullah — Two Lea colt, a half brother to last years Derby and Preakness champion, Tim Tam, will be pointed for the 00,000-added Arlington Classic and 00,000-added American Derby later this summer. Among other top-level Calumet performers included in the latest shipment are Seventy-Six, Buralba, Coles Melody, Old Cash, Dunraven, Sunny Street and Charlesgate. Meanwhile, Kerr Stables Round Table, world money-winning champion, continued training for his 1959 Chicago debut, which probably will take place in the May 30 Memorial Day 0,000 - added Balmoral Turf Handicap, his major objective, or in a prep race prior to that. Round Table has been galloping daily the past three days on the grass oval, usually going about one and a half miles in company with stablemate Tall Chief II. The latter is an accomplished grass performer in his own right.
