War Age Registers Upset Over Favored Landseair Mrs. Zelda Cohens Colt Home in Clear at Pimlico on Sloppy Oval By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 7.— Handling the sloppy going in splendid fashion, Mrs. Zelda Cohens War Age this afternoon upset the talent when he scored decisively in the featured Verdant Valley Purse. High Ground Stables Landseair earned second money after stumbling and almost going down after a sixteenth of a mile. Third position went to Garrett Y. Bookers Mad Hare. Overhead conditions remained uncertain and a crowd of 10,204 witnessed the program, which was conducted over a track which had "tightened" up a bit since heavy early morning rains. War Age, under Freddie Ryan, was timed in 1:12 V5 for the six furlongs and paid 6.60. War Age and Alan T. Clarkes Jeannie C. raced for the lead along the backstretch, with each holding a slight advantage at intervals. Jeannie C. displayed little heart, however, and took the easy way out, stopping badly and finishing last in the six-horse field. Once having disposed of Jeannie C, War Continued on Page Thirty -Six War Age Registers Upset Over Favored Landseair Mrs. Zelda Cohens Colt Home in Clear at Pimlico on Sloppy Oval Continued from Page One Age was without a threat as Ryan continued to urge him strongly through the stretch, applying the whip several times in the final sixteenth of a mile to maintain a three and one-half length advantage. Landseair, while soundly beaten by War Age, had ample excuse in the race. Indeed, he was fortunate to remain upright when he stumbled badly after the opening sixteenth of a mile. This he did, however, and appeared still to be a serious threat entering the stretch. Too much had been taken from him. however, and the necessary closing spurt was lacking when needed. Landseair finished less than a length in front of Mad Hare, while Mrs. Chester A. Lyons Penocc was in fourth position after having held a favorable position for five furlongs. Penoccs effort was very much like those of last year, when he earned a portion of the purse in 20 of his 21 starts but finished first on only three occasions. Mrs. Cohen, owner of War Age, is the wife of Ben Cohen, a director of the Maryland Jockey Club who was present in the winners circle following the race. Mrs. L. M.. Carvers Wise Moka, who hadnt finished in the money in xour starts during the past two years, graduated from the maiden ranks in the opener, scoring at odds of 4.80 for . Under Gus Pappas, Wise Moka won by a length while covering six furlongs in 1:15. James Arthurs! Cee Vee. a favorite, won the second race to put the finishing touches on a 68.40 Daily Double. Nick Shuk, who won yesterdays Toboggan Handicap in New York but dropped the local jockey lead when Bobby Mitchell booted home a triple, regained the top rung as he drove Mrs. Margaret McDonnells Seguro to victory in the fifth race. The .60 favorite was timed the six furlongs in l:142s while downing Mrs. Wm. Kadys Stepfar and Kay-Gee Stables Bolo Mack.
