LONG SHOT SURPRISES Little Empress Wins Latonias Main Race and Pays 7.40. Audrey L. and Thistle Red Combination Returns 54.20 for in Covington "Daily Double". i . LATONIA, Ky., June 18. Sprinters of the claiming ranks performed in five of the eight events staged over a heavy track at Latonia this afternoon, and furnished good sport for a large gathering, which put in an appearance despite the fact that there was a threat of rain. Small fields were the order, with the exception of the second and third contests, designed to bring together a cheaper band of sprinters for the "daily double" races, which was captured by Audrey L. and Thistle Red. The combination paid 54.20 to those holding tickets. The Mt. OJivet Claiming Purse, fifth on the fare and over a six furlongs route, served as the most attractive event for which a field of seven was mustered. Little Empress, a long shot in the betting, came through with a fine performance to register a surprise victory over the strongly favored Board Trade in this event. Chanting was third, while John Allens Wise Bessa, Busy Lutrecia and Ding Bin followed in the order named. DAZZLING SPEED. The three-year-old bay filly, which shouldered the feathery impost of 95 pounds, displayed a dazzling burst of speed to show the way throughout and carried apprentice Dee Packer to his second success of the day. Opening up a lead of two lengths soon after the start, Little Empress was never in danger. i ! Ding Bin gave chase to the leader for the j I first quarter, then Board- Trade took up the , task of heading the leader, but the attempt ! was futile as Little Empress increased her : advantage to four lengths by the time that ! a half mile was completed, and romped ; the remainder of the trip to win by a length and a half. Supporters of the winner received a dividend of 7.40 for straight wagers. CLEVER RIDE. Under a cleverly judged ride from apprentice Dee Packer, G. S. Boswells Thistle Red proved best of the twelve platers that made up the field in the third race, another three-quarters of a mile event. Vertner finished second and Joy Sweep was third. The fourth resulted in a thrilling stretch duel, with Mrs. J. Wolfes Stout Heart, a rank outsider in the betting, gaining a neck verdict over Ripplealong at the end of six furlongs. Jubilee Jim landed in the third slot. In the sixth race, at a mile and a sixteenth, Brilliant Light carried W. E. Snyders colors and jockey W. Garner to an easy victory, registering by six lengths over Boy Valet. The latter got up in the last stride to nose out Campagna for place honors.
