I I ! j I ! NAVARRE GETS DECISION Beats Miss Prudence by a Nose in Thrilling Finish. Favorites in Minority at Detroit Track Donna Leona Proves Best in Fourth. DETROIT, Mich., June 18 In. a thrilling finish, Navarre, from Mrs. Frank J. Navins Detroit-owned Tall Trees Stable, emerged the winner of the Grand Circus Park Purse, wbich topped the Fair Grounds program this afternoon. Under the feather of 101 pounds and ridden by Melvin Calvert, he was up in the last stride to beat Dixianas Miss Prudence by a nose at the end of six furlongs. R. R. Greenlees Lolschen was third, a head back of Miss Prudence and a neck before Windshield, which saved fourth from Always Blue and Brain Trust, which completed the small field of six. After beginning fastest of all, Navarre was unable to keep up when Miss Prudence and Always Blue drove to the front. Lolschen was closest in pursuit of the leaders, but after reaching the stretch where she was only a head back of Miss Prudence, was trying to bear in and this disadvantage proved too great when Navarre came on to head her arid nip Miss Prudence at the wire. Inclement weather, which has prevailed the greater part of the week, was again on tap. Light showers during the night prevented the track from reaching a better condition, but the crowd was a good one, considering the drop in the temperature. As to be expected, favorites were in the minority, but there were no big surprises. MILD SURPRISE. Sleep Along provided a mild surprise when he turned back Baste, King Bee and seven others at the end of six furlongs in the third race, for which Saunderstown was a lukewarm choice. The favorite, sprinted, into a good lead during the opening quarter, but Capitalist and Gladess offered him stubborn opposition during, the opening half mile and when the winner charged down on the put- side he gave way fast to be a well beaten fifth. Donna Leona won her first victory of four starts this year when, she was a surprise winner of the fourth race for better grade plater two-year-olds and for which Noajean was an eleven to five choice. Flaunting the colors of the Aeolian Stable and ridden by Harry Albrecht, the winner put up a game performance to reach the end of five furlongs a half a length before Oddesa Lad, which led Wicked Time by some six lengths t for second. i Alwintour scored his ninth victory of the year in the fifth whea he turned back Kingsbury, Mystic Sign and four others, including the heavily supported Golden Fate, which finished last and came back lame. Benefited by being permitted to come over on Mystic Sign when the latter attempted to" drive through on-the inside near the final furlong of the three-quarters sprint, Alwintour came to the -finish with a three length advantage over Kingsbury, which also both- I ered Mystic Sign. The latter lasted to beat Red Flyer by a nose for minor honors.
