DR. RUSSELL E. STONE DIES Prominent Surgeon and President of Louisiana. Jockey Club, Passes Away at New Orleans. NEW ORLEANS, La., June 18. Dr. Russell E. Stone, president of the Louisiana Jockey Club and one of the leading surgeons of America, died here this morning after a losing battle following an emergency appendicitis operation. Stricken last week, Dr. Stone underwent an immediate appendectomy and was doing nicely at Toura Infirmary. His condition was reported especially good yesterday and attending physicians thought him on the road to rapid recovery. But during last night his condition became much worse and he died at 4 oclock this morning in spite of the desperate efforts of a staff of physicians and nurses, who administered oxygen and fought for his life to the last. Besides being president of the Louisiana Jockey Club, Dr; Stone was official physician for the Fair Grounds track and - the Louisiana State Boxing Commission. He took .a keen interest in sports and over a period of more than thirty years has operated on hundreds of famous jockeys, boxers and ball players.
