PLANS FOR CRETE OPENING Lincoln Fields May Be Available for Horsemenin Short Time. Overflow of Horses to Be Taken Care of at .Washington Park Conferring on Stakes Program. Preparations to open Lincoln Fields for the accommodations of horses and for training now are being made and it is probable that the Crete track, where the Chicago racing season begins on Thursday, May 25, will be at the disposal of horsemen within a short time. The track received a new coating of top soil last fall and all of the barns are being put Into first class condition for the arrival of their occupants. As in previous seasons, the overflow of horses will be cared for at nearby Washington Park. No horses, however, will be permitted at either track without written approval of their stall applications and not even then until preparations have been completed. According to Col. M. J. Winn, executive director of the track, there will be plenty of racing material for the twenty-seven-lay run, for already Tom Young, superi tendent, has received applications for more than 600 thoroughbreds. Chicago racegoers and include numerous im- portant establishments. Toung has been a frequent visitor to the track during the past several weeks, coming from Louisville where he also serves as superintendent at Churchill Downs, and it is his opinion that as many as 1,200 horses may be available for racing at Lincoln Fields. Announcement as to when Lincoln Fields and Washington Park will be ready to take care of horses will be made as soon as possible. Washington Park stables will be available after this week but the racing strip may not be opened for another ten days. Meanwhile officials are working out a program of stakes and purses and this information also will be released within a short time. Added money races will be scheduled for each of the five Saturdays of the meeting and also for Decoration Day, which this year falls on a. Tuesday, an occasion which probably will attract the largest crowd of the entire meeting.
